This famous walk right through the middle of the “west mesa" of Balboa Park reveals two historic sites and some of the biggest, grandest trees you’ll see in San Diego. On weekends the vast green & grassy areas become very active, with sports such as frisbee and volleyball. Plus, there are seats to rest on, drinking fountains, and restrooms. A happy walk for all!
Start this happy tree walk at the statues of George Marsten, Alonza Horton & Ephraim Morse. The fountain, benches, and shade from a group of African Fern trees make a great place to rest and recharge. These big evergreen trees, found where El Prado turns into Laurel Street and meets 6th Avenue, give great shade all year long.
Continue around the corner to begin the main walk through the park.
Enjoy some of the largest trees in San Diego as well as amenities: restrooms (close at 4pm) and water fountains.
Along this walk are large playfields, great for recreation as well as leisure.
Turn right after the cluster of American Sweet Gum trees to continue towards Marsten House and its museum gift shop. This stand of trees is a unique delight; a rare instance of natural-style plantings for a beautiful, peaceful, and shady effect.
