This walk is about half a mile. It combines Tower Blocks with street level privately owned businesses. Experience lots of historic sights plus bars, shops, and restaurants.
The Market Place deli - themarketplacesd.com - is open every day from early to late. Opposite is a barbershop and the popular Mnemonic Coffee, and just up the street is a German-style building next to village level salons and clothing shops for women. Back on the east side of 5th Ave is a condo tower with the ever popular Orange Theory Fitness. Street trees plus sidewalk plantings make this block attractive too.

The next block of 5th Ave is grand with the very beautiful 1951 St Paul's Cathedral occupying the entire corner to 6th Ave. Next to the cathedral is a new apartment tower. Although it still has empty shop spaces on the first floor, youthful Jacaranda trees grow out front on 5th Ave. Across the street is a Mexican restaurant Barrio Star and the french-style, high-end restaurant the Parc Bistro. On the corner is Hane Sushi Japanese restaurant.
The next block astounds with the mysteriously stunning Abbey and its rooftop Mormon-style gold sculpture.
Opposite is a nice group of small shops - a bakery, hairdresser and feminine clothes
Further up 5th Ave on the corner you will see the historic Fire Station No 5 building. Across the street are the very modern Pure Bar and Park Condo tower with nice, recent tree plantings.
Note: the entire block east of 5th Ave to 6th Ave from Palm to Quince Streets is now fenced off for construction of another giant residential tower. Expect 3-4 years of utter chaos!
The next block has mixed medical and professional offices; the following block as well. On the corner of 5th Ave and Redwood St is the uniquely fabulous Cafe Bassam. On the opposite corner is North Park Beer pub.
The last two blocks have mixed shops and businesses starting with Spirit Tattoo and Flimzys Records followed soon after by various shops. On the corner is Jimmy Carters Mexican Cafe. Across the street is the 7-Eleven convenience store. The rest of this block has very nice, mid-size apartment buildings with good street trees and plantings. Our walk ends here at Thorn St. You can continue walking up to Hillcrest or return down 5th to where we began.
