Kalamazoo Fitness Project is a special place. It’s a community built on getting better each and every day, whatever that means for you. It’s constantly changing and growing itself with new people, new methodologies, and new tactics. But through it all, the heartbeat of it stays the same. To know Kalamazoo Fitness Project fully, it’s important to know where it started.
Our gym community was originally founded in 2014 by Tim Fecker under the name Crossfit Kalamazoo. Crossfit Kalamazoo was originally located off of West Main, but eventually moved to it’s current location on Ravine Road. Crossfit Kalamazoo saw many people introduced to the Crossfit methodology and take significant steps in their fitness journey. More than that, a solid core of committed members was formed, a few of which are still vital parts of the Kalamazoo Fitness Project family today.
Crossfit Kalamazoo eventually decided it was time to drop their CrossFit affiliation, but found a new tribe in Crossfit Mayhem becoming a Mayhem Affiliate. Crossfit was still in its blood and the Crossfit methodology was still its DNA, but Crossfit Kalamazoo changed its name to Zoo Town Fitness Collective and became a part of Mayhem Nation.
In 2021 the Shrode family moved from Virginia to Kalamazoo and almost immediately joined Crossfit Kalamazoo. For them, crossfit was a family affair. Maddy was about 6 months pregnant when they joined the gym, and now they have 2 kids running around the gym.
In November of 2024, Maddy and Carson had the opportunity to take over the gym. Tim had built an incredible community and great facility, but the time had come for him to move on to another phase of life. The Shrodes had been praying for an opportunity like this and were confident this was something they were supposed to step into. And with that, the Kalamazoo Fitness Project was born.
So why name it the Kalamazoo Fitness Project? Well, we believe that we are all supposed to be builders and creators. For some it’s growing a business, or building a house, or teaching the next generation, or growing a family. Others are designers, nurses, architects, or engineers. We’re all builders and we all want to make things better. And that’s what KFP is all about, the pursuit of better. Better what? Better humans, better fitness, better community. We want to leave everything better than we found it. We are the project and it takes all of us to make it happen. A project is something that’s still in progress, that takes work. So wherever you find yourself in life and fitness, this is a place to get better.
Come be apart of the next chapter of Kalamazoo Fitness Project.
