Kalaheo Elementary School’s PTSA Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the PTSA?
A: We are an organization of parents, teachers, students, and administrative staff who advocate for educational rights and programs.
Q: Do my PTSA dues go to the school?
A: Some. 90% of PTSA dues go to the state and national PTA organization which then develops and provides schools with programs such as The Great Artist Program, and Reflections as well as provide program insurance. 10% of dues come back to the school to fund other locally based programs. Additional donations go directly to the school.
Q: I joined the PTSA last school year. Do I need to reapply?
A: Yes, membership is renewed on a yearly basis.
Q: How does the PTSA make money for school improvements, field trips, and other events?
A: Fundraising, donations, grants, membership dues and HI 5 recycling programs!
Q: What goes on at PTSA meetings?
A: We discuss any concerns or new and existing programs on the agenda and organize volunteers for current programs. We discuss how our curriculum is implemented and meets with national standards, how to utilize our budget, and how to increase our budget for the programs we want.
Q: Why should I join the PTSA?
A: By joining the PTSA you can take an active part in the educational experiences of your child through our school and community!
Q: How often does the PTSA meet?
A: We meet once a month on the First Wednesday of the month for an hour though times can change to accommodate the majority of members. If you have any concerns outside of these times, or cannot make a meeting, you are more than welcome to speak to or email any board member to add your concerns to the agenda and it will be addressed during the meeting.
Q: If I join the PTSA do I need to attend all the meetings?
A: No. We understand that we all have busy lives with work and extracurricular activities. We will send out meeting agendas prior to meetings and minutes after meetings. If there is anything you would like to see addressed, please contact us and we will add it to the agenda. Even if you never attend a meeting, you can still have a voice in our school.
Q: Can I bring my children to meetings?
A: Yes! We understand that child care is often difficult. Children are welcome at meetings though we ask that you let us know if you are bringing children before hand so that child care and an activity can be provided for them.
Q: Who should I contact with questions or concerns?
A: Any board member! This year's President is Malie Smith. Email questions or comments to ptsa@kalaheoschool.k12.hi.us or drop us a letter in the PTSA mail box in the Kalaheo Elementary School front office.
Q: Where can I find out more about the PTSA?
A: Check out the national organization at www.PTA.org!
