Place value
Making tidy tens
Place value partitioning - addition
Using PVP for 2 and 2 digits:
134 + 87 =
100 + 0 = 100
30 + 80 = 110
4 + 7 = 11
100 + 110 + 11 = 221
Using PVP for 3 digit numbers:
154 + 129 =
100 + 100 = 200
50 + 20 = 70
4 + 9 = 13
200 + 70 + 13 = 283
Place value partitioning - subtraction
Using PVP to solve 3 digit problems:
134 - 21 =
100 - 0 = 100
30 - 20 = 10
4 - 1 = 3
100 + 10 + 3 = 113
Using PVP to solve problems where the ones or tens number on the first number is too large:
156 - 69 =
156 - 60 = 96
96 - 9 = 87
When you cannot subtract the ones numbers and/or the tens numbers without going into a negative, do not partition the first number, only the second.
