Randolph Eastern School District is a PLTW Distinguished District. North Side Elementary uses the curriculum, which includes computer science, is used at all grade levels with additional computer science opportunities added into the curriculum. We have also implemented the Leader in Me program at North Side. All students receive instruction from this curriculum which incorporates the Indiana Employability Standards as well.
At least 50 percent of planned, integrated STEM curriculum is evidence-based
As a PLTW Distinguished District, we implement the Project Lead The Way (PLTW) curriculum, an IDOE vetted curriculum, is implemented across all grades at North Side Elementary. The sheet below documents the modules implemented at each grade level. 20 of the 23 teachers (87%) implement PLTW modules at least 50% of the school year.
Research demonstrates that PLTW students outperform their peers in school, are better prepared for post-secondary studies, and are more likely to consider careers as scientists, technology experts, engineers, mathematicians, healthcare providers, and researchers compared to their non-PLTW peers. Students find PLTW programs relevant, inspiring, engaging, and foundational to their future success
The attached spreadsheet documents some of the research carried out by North Side/Randolph Eastern as they were determining the cost of implementing PLTW in their building.
All students at North Side Elementary engage in learning computer science through the PLTW curriculum.
In addition to the Computer/Technology class all students rotate through during the school year (see CS Scope and Sequence below), classroom teachers are also implementing Computer Science modules in the Project Lead The Way curriculum. PLTW is an IDOE Vetted Curriculum. 100% of North Side students receive Computer Science instruction both in the general education classroom and rotation specials class.
North Side Elementary maintains a News page as part of their
The document below demonstrates the Computer Science instruction our CS teacher implements into her STEM/CS rotations. Students participate in this work once a week in conjunction to the STEM and Computer Science work they are already obtaining through the integrated STEM instruction in their classrooms.
The attached rota outlines the STEM/Computer Science specials rotation schedule for North Side Elementary School. From this, you can see that each teacher's classroom participates on a weekly basis in a dedicated classroom specifically for STEM and Computer Science instruction meaning that all students 100% participate in Standards Based Computer Science Instruction.
Students worked through the Tynker: Programming 100 course to familiarize themselves with the Tynker program before completing the PLTW Grade 5 Infection: Modeling and Simulation (Old Version) module.
The attached document demonstrates the scope and sequence for teaching computer science to throughout the 2021-2022 school year to all students at Northside Elementary.
Employability Skills Standards, based upon the appropriate grade band, are integrated into the school curriculum for 100 percent of students
Leader in Me® is a whole-school transformation model and process developed in partnership with educators that empowers students with the leadership and life skills they need to thrive in the 21st century. It is based on principles and practices of personal, interpersonal and organizational effectiveness, and upon the powerful premise that every child possesses unique strengths and has the ability to be a leader.
Leader in Me helps students learn how to become self-reliant, take initiative, plan ahead, set and track goals, do their homework, prioritize their time, manage their emotions, be considerate of others, express their viewpoint persuasively, resolve conflicts, find creative solutions, value differences, and live a balanced life. The process helps students develop the skills and self-confidence they need to lead their lives and succeed in school and beyond.
Employability Skills Standards, based upon the appropriate grade band, are integrated into the school curriculum for 100 percent of students. The spreadsheet below in the left column demonstrates the amount of teachers, 23 of 23, 100% are embedding the Leader in Me curriculum in their daily instruction. The spreadsheet in the right column is a crosswalk connecting the 7 Habits and the Indiana Employability Skills Standards.
The attached document crosswalks the Indiana Employability Skills with the 7 Habits of Highly Effective people that are the focus of the Leader in Me Curriculum.
Students at Randolph Eastern have the opportunity to learn valuable employability skills as they learn about the importance of leadership through the Leader in Me program.
General education teachers are connected with appropriate special education teachers and support services teachers (ENL, Interpreters, etc...) for necessary material development and refinement for diverse learners based upon their understanding of students' academic needs
This master schedule was designed to allow IA's to push into each teacher's classroom throughout the course of the year in order to support students with diverse learning needs as they participate in the their PLTW Work in the classroom. Each grade level team, along with support teachers, determined the scope and sequence of PLTW modules. This collaborative planning allows for the support teachers and IA's to push in during PLTW instruction.
The attached schedule shows our specials rotation. To address the needs of our diverse learners, our IA's push in during our technology rotation providing students with special needs support during this time.
The attached document shows the schedule of our Special Education Teachers and the targeted support they provide to students in our classes at North Side Elementary. Please note the push in support specifically for math, as well as that for Science which is where our PLTW lessons are carried out.
PLTW Lesson Plans created with support for students with special needs
At least 75 percent of teachers use a variety of assessment methods for students to demonstrate STEM learning
Assessments Used
19 of 24 teachers (79%) responded to the survey question, "What types of assessment do you use in your classroom?"
From responses to the left, it is clear that a variety of assessment formats are used in classrooms across North Side Elementary.
PLTW Launch Assessments
Every teacher at Northside Elementary uses the various assessments built into the PLTW Launch curriculum to gauge the level of STEM Learning that takes place throughout these modules.
We use Vimme Math weekly to test and track our student’s progress. We get class reports for each grade level, each student, and each teacher. The reports also provide information about what students need remediation and what we need to re-teach.
