Our school enjoys partnerships with businesses, organizations, and individuals. We have worked collectively with Purdue University, Indiana University Kokomo, IDOE, and the Commission for Higher Education. Two after school programs: Gear Up and Bridges Outreach are available to students. Gear Up provides both in class and after school tutoring for students, a monthly family dinner, STEM activities, and college planning activities for students. Gear Up has also provided the school with grant funding which has been used to purchase a variety of STEM kits and experiments for teachers to use in their classrooms. Bridges Outreach is an after-school program that integrates tutoring and life skills. It is available to all KHS students. Many teachers have invited professionals in a variety of fields into their classrooms to speak to students, and give them a look at possible STEM careers. Through our school's robotics program, students learn engineering skills from professionals in the field.
At least three community partners, from different sectors, provide feedback on the school's STEM program
Indiana GEAR UP has partnered with us and has a huge impact on our STEM Focus at Kokomo STEM Academy.
Solidarity Community has been a partner of Kokomo High School for the past 4 years. They actively participate in our STEM program, providing feedback to the leadership team and also engaging students in multiple on the job opportunities throughout the year. These students receive meaningful experiences, learn problem solving skills and return to Kokomo, engaging students and providing guidance to our STEM Leadership Team for future opportunities.
AndyMark has been a longtime contributor to our STEM program providing feedback in various capacities from the earliest foundations of our TechnoKats program all the way to our implementation of PLTW in our AP Computer Science course. We are grateful for their continued support and feedback as we see our STEM program move forward into the future.
Attached, please find the agenda from our Fall Advisory Board meeting for the KACC where our advisory board members were able to provide feedback on our programming at the KACC.
Button motors has been an essential partner of the Kokomo High School STEM program, providing feedback through the course of the school year in various capacities as well as helping develop employability skills for students through by providing training and on the job experience to our students.
Duke Energy has been a long time partner of the Kokomo STEM Program. They have worked with us in a variety of capacities, from supporting our TechnoKats Team, to helping fund our programming through various grants.
In response to our recognition in the newspaper, the Kokomo Engine Plant, Stellantis has encouraged students in our STEM Academy to utilize our new MakerSpace to participate in their Drive for Design Competition.
High School: At least 50 percent of students have direct experiences with STEM professionals and/or professional STEM work environments quarterly
National Guard presents information, job opportunities, training procedures and enrollment opportunities in STEM careers & STEM education in the Guard and Military available to all students.
All students at Kokomo use Naviance, a program developed to help students assess their skills and interests and allows them to explore pathways they can follow to reach their post secondary goals.
Kokomo STEM Academy also offers its students the opportunity to carry out a career exploration internship of their choice through the outlined course:
Yamaha Robotics USA created this career exploration video specifically for our students to learn about the various manufacturing, and engineering positions that are available from their company.
All students at Kokomo STEM Academy have an opportunity to conduct career explorations. Here is an assignment from our Earth Science course where students are tasked with doing just that.
Five or more established community partners are actively engaged in the STEM program
Kokomo High School has, worked with for many years, Purdue's College of Science Outreach Program. They provide our teachers many resources we use to enhance the teaching and learning of Science Learning through Engineering Design.
Mentors from the community as well as from SHAK Maker Space work on a weekly basis throughout the course of the school year with our Techno-Kats Robotics Team.
Purdue's GEAR UP program works with the students of Kokomo on a weekly basis, providing assistance with homework and engaging them in STEM activities.
This STEM unit was created in response to the burning of the Cathedral of Notre Dame. At the bottom of page 3, you will notice how we have leveraged community partnerships with Kevin Kolodziej, Bud Bence, Dimensions Inc. and Kevin Scully of the Design Collaborative to help our students develop 5-1 minute videos about architecture.
We have partnered with the Man-Up/STEP-Up program. They work with our students in our maker space and we have carried out environmental work with them.
The city engineer for Kokomo dedicated time to the school last year as our students carried out a research and design study of the roman aqueducts.
The Wildcat Guardians who work to preserve and cleanup the section of Wildcat Creek in Kokomo have partnered with our school's Environmental Science Club as they carried out water samples as they concentrated on the reservoir area and spillway.
STEM activities such as robotics and engineering clubs, internships, and apprenticeships are available and accessible by at least 50 percent of students in an on-going basis
TechnoKats is the Kokomo High School's First Robotics Team. TechnoKats is a student-led team dedicated to promoting STEM and life skills, including creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration. Members maintain the legacy of
Team 45 with partnerships within the team, within the local community and within FIRST.
This is the second year in which students at Kokomo are able to participate in the school's eSports team. The opportunity to join the team is open to any student at Kokomo High School. The attached document is for one of the competitions the team was able to compete in.
President of the Wildcat Guardians came in and spoke with students about lowering their carbon footprint by reduce, reuse, and recycle. members of our school's Environmental Science Club assisted in the cleanup of the Wildcat Creek.
Provides at least three opportunities/modes to inspire and inform under-represented students about careers in STEM fields
Multi-Disciplinary-Students from low-income and single parent homes are provided the opportunity to gain work and life skills within the MAN-UP and STEP-UP programs. The are exposed to different career paths on how to obtain jobs within those fields. The students gain hands-on experience and guidance.
One of our Kokomo STEM Academy Students, Mitchell Van Horn wrote a grant through the Bezos Foundation to create a program called KATS Together. Through this program students with special needs build relationships with their classmates during lunchtime activities.
Below is a flyer that was created to promote our Woodworking and Metal Summer camp for girls. This was designed to allow girls to begin exploring the possibilities of welding and to promote the program so they would want to join the welding class the upcoming school year.
