Gymnastics

By Keira Williams

Introduction

The modern sport of gymnastics typically involves events. Events are the different exercises that gymnast do. For women the events are vault, bars, beam, and floor. But for men it’s a little different there events are rings, parallel bars(“P” bars), floor, vault, pommel horse and single bar (which is metal).

Bars

The uneven bars are a gymnastics apparatus that are made of fiberglass and have a wood coating. The bars are placed at different heights and widths so the gymnasts can transition bar to bar. On bars you put on chalk witch is a type of powder used to help have a better grip. When gymnasts get to higher levels they are required to use grips, grips help gymnasts to be able to do more advanced stuff without their hands constantly ripping. When your in lower levels you start on low bars but once you get to higher levels like 9 and 10 you have an option to start on low or high.

Floor

Women weren’t allowed to compete on floor until 1948. The floor is usually the color blue and has tape that’s a different color than the floor around it which indicates for a gymnast when they are out of bounds. When a gymnast is out of bounds they will get a big deduction from their floor score depending on if they have 1 or 2 feet out of the tape line. The floor is the event where gymnast get to show their personalities. A gymnast will get to have floor music that they pick and a choreographed floor routine that they compete. When you get to higher levels you have your own music but when your in lower levels everyone has the same music and choreography.

For lower levels you can only compete 1 or two tumbling pases but higher levels you half to compete 3 or 4 tumbling classes.

Vault

The vault was first known as the “horse” but over time they changed the shape of the vault table. You can set the vault at different heights depending on what the gymnast likes the height at. For vault there is always a spring board in front of it. At lower levels gymnasts do their vault onto a mat called a “fisher” witch is a big mat with a huge foam block inside of it. Once you get to level 4 you start doing vaults over the table and soon enough you will be doing Yurchenkos! When you get to higher levels you can compete front or back vaults for example a Yurchenko is a round off back handspring onto the table and then flip or twist out of it.

Beam

Beam is to most one of the scarier events, it’s 4 inches wide and 16 feet long. Beam is also an event where gymnast perform dance elements like poses, turns and leaps. They also have to do an acrobatic skill which can be really difficult depending on the level lower levels compete forward rolls, handstands, cartwheels, back walkovers and backhandspring. When you get up to levels like 7 you half to start competing connections for example back walkover back walkover, back handspring back handspring, back tucks, back handspring back layout, layout layout, front tuck and many many more.

At competitions

Women’s events in gymnastics (bars, beam, floor and vault) are scored 0-10. A zero means you scratched the events meaning you did not compete on the event and all you did was touch the apparatus and then salute to the judges. Usually girls score in between 7-10. It’s really rare to get a 10 because a 10 means that the judges loved what you did and you did nothing wrong in your routine, that also means you had pointed toes the whole time, you had presentation, you stuck every landing, you had all the requirements and ect. When awards come you usually don’t get trophies I mean there will be trophies at a lot of meets but gymnast usually get medals. Gymnast’s can get up to 5 medals for vault, beam, bars, floor and all-round. Sometimes even for allround you get a trophy instead. Oh, but you can’t forget team awards! Usually you participate in team awards if you have a team of 3-4 girls or more. They take the top 3 scores from your team and decide who’s team got the highest all-round. For team awards they give you banners.

Conclusion

In conclusion gymnastics is a fun sport where you get to learn a whole lot of new stuff even a sorta kinda “new language”;) You get to have a lifetime experience going to different states to compete, meeting famous olympic gymnasts that inspire you and meeting new gymnasts that become your teammates. Plus you get to enjoy the colorful leotards you get to wear and what all gymnasts love, Conditioning!

Circus Animal Harm

The circus is a great way to get to see wildlife animals in person. They get to show of tricks they were trained to do and they are always fun to watch and get to experience. But for the animals in isn’t that way.

96% of their lives are spent in cages or chains.11 months a year they travel long distances in box cars with only being able to eat and sleep. When allowed out the animals have to get trained using extreme “discipline” for example hitting, poking, whipping, and shocking with electrical prods.Wild animal acts are dangerous threat to public health and safety. Since the 1900s circuses have been responsible for more than 100 human injuries worldwide.

Elephants in the circus start training at a very young age. The Mother’s legs are tied down so that when she delivers she’s not able to protect the baby and then the baby is immediately stolen and then they get tied down and beaten for obey. The elephant are also hitten before going on stage to tell them that if they mess up their will be consequences. Tigers are afraid of fire but are forced to jump through it (many have been burned). Some circus animals are drugged so they are easier to control or their teeth get removed so that they can’t fight back. For example there was a chimpanzee that had its teeth knocked out by a hammer.
