The School Counseling program is a vital portion for the education of the whole student and is designed to meet the needs of all students. The primary goal of the School Counseling program is to assist students, parents, and staff through academic, personal/social, and career counseling. These standards are created for School Counseling programs in Virginia Public Schools by the American School Counseling Association (ASCA). These counseling experiences are accomplished through the following activities:
When a student meets with me one one one the focus is often on defining goals, resolving conflicts, and learning techniques to help with emotions. Students can self-refer by leaving a note, teachers and other staff members can also request that I work with students regarding a specific concern. Caregivers may also contact me to request that I talk with their child.
There are times when students share a common concern and could benefit from meeting together to share ideas and talk through their concerns. Typically groups will last for half an hour and will meet for 6-8 weeks. Parent permission is required.
Classroom lessons are provided every 8 school days. Lessons are designed to help guide student success and create positive relationships within their classroom and the school. Classroom lessons focus on the 3 counseling domains and standards established by the Department of Education. Academic Development: students will acquire skills need to help them meet their academic goals. Career Development: students will investigate the world of work. Personal/Social Development: students will acquire an understanding of, and respect for, self and others, and the skills to be responsible citizens.
