Kandinsky Inspired Trees
First Graders learned about the art of Wassily Kandsinsky. They applied his use of concentric circles of colors to the design of a tree. Students cut paper circles of different sizes and colors and arranged them concentrically on the branches of the tree they cut out.
Welcome to the new 25-26 year of art for first grade!
Shapes make a picture!
After listening to a book called "The Shape of Things" by Dayle Ann Dodd, First graders reviewed scissor skills by cutting out a mixture of circles, squares, rectangles and triangles. Then they chose a piece of colored paper and arranged all or some of the pieces into a picture of their choosing, modifying the shapes as well. Next they glued down the shapes and finally added color with crayons or markers.
Warm and Cool Painted Paper Weaving
End of the 24-25 school year.
First graders are painting two paintings on paper. One painting is only painted with warm colors and the other painting is painted with only cool colors. Their cool color painting is cut to be the loom and the weft (the strands that are woven into). The warm color painting is cut to be the warp (the pieces that are woven into the warp).
Clay Penguins
First graders are making penguins out of clay. They have learned how to shape the penguin and add features such as wings, beak, and feet by pinching and pulling from a single piece of clay. They are then glazing their penguins and arranging them on a "iceberg".
Tooth Fairy
First graders are making a Tooth Fairy that includes at hat or crown, a bag or something to carry teeth and wings or a way to fly. They design their own Tooth Fairy and add lines and patterns to the clothing the Tooth Fairy is wearing. They are continuing to practice their painting skills by adding glitter paint to their drawing
Pinch Pot Snowman
First Graders made a snowmen that was built with three clay pinch pots and finished with pipe cleaner arms. Students learned how to roll the clay into a ball, pinch to make a flattened pot, and then use slip to join the three pots and help to smooth the clay
Elements of Art Project
First graders learned about four elements of art: Shape, line, color and space. They practiced each of the elements and made a reference page for each in their book. They then used their individual imaginations, and their personal choice in how they used the elements of art that they learned to create an original work of art. Students were given the option of using pencil, crayon, markers, watercolor, color paper, glue and scissors.
