Happy Mental Health Awareness Month! This year’s theme is “More Than Enough” to remind us of the personal value we all possess regardless of how we look, what we can or can’t do, or where we are from. Being “more than enough” is an empowering and hopeful reminder that we all hold important individual qualities that make us special. This message is particularly relevant in that it reinforces the ideas of inclusion, compassion, and friendship that we promote every day in our After-school community. We hope this month, and EVERY month, all our students feel appreciated and respected for who they are so please remind your kiddos how much we love them! Happy May!

Hello Argenziano families! We are almost to the close of Session 3, wow that went by fast! The end of the school year is quickly approaching as well. Students seem to have thoroughly enjoyed a variety of clubs this session- learning new skills, building teamwork, and brushing up on their baking skills. They continue to have lots of fun being outside on the school playground & at Lincoln!

*Our end of session family party will be coming up in June, be on the lookout for an email that will have more details about this exciting event!

Remember to pack your child’s sunscreen in their bag, thanks!

Let’s check out what each grade level is up to…

Pre-K (Ms. Mandy):

Happy Spring! For this month, the pre-k group continued colorful and vibrant spring themed projects. We made paper ladybugs, paper plate  caterpillars, and pasta sunflowers.  For the last couple of weeks we transitioned into creating carnival and circus themed crafts. The kids made lively and fun paper clowns and jester hats!

K-2nd grade (Ms. Lia, Mx Ileana, Ms. Makaila, Ms. Elizabeth, Ms. Etta & Ms. Brianna:

Hey everyone! Happy spring! We have been keeping very busy in our K-2 clubs this session. In Makerspace we have become fashion designers to create our own costumes! Each costume included headgear and a prop and outfits ranged from a Minecraft character to a taco fairy! For the rest of the year we will continue to use recycled materials and repurpose them into our own new creations.

In Baking Bonanza we have been seriously indulging our sweet tooth with plenty of fun new dessert recipes. Most recently we made rainbow swirl cupcakes and edible chocolate cookie dough truffles. Our bakers in training are learning to mix and measure while collecting each recipe in their own Baking Bonanza cookbooks!

I cannot wait to finish the year off strong with all of you all at Argenziano :)

Love,

Ms. Lia

3rd-5th (Mr. Mark):

Hey hey from Mark in Group 5! With just a month left of school, we're all making sure to get plenty of outside time while the weather is great (but still not too hot) — it's a good opportunity to run and dance after a whole lotta MCAS! Some of us are also expressing ourselves and getting our energy out in my club Improv and Theater Games, which I've led since last session.  In the club, we start with a warm-up game that's fun and silly while also reinforcing improv staples like focus and "chivalry" — that is, going with the flow and knowing when to let someone else shine. After, we play a more advanced game focusing on making up scenes, remembering to introduce basic narrative elements like characters, environments, and relationships. The kids come up with some really fun stuff — my favorite this week involved astronauts moonwalking on the moon.

 Hello Healey families!

We are thoroughly enjoying all the beautiful spring weather we have had recently. We took advantage of a beautiful day and a canceled club to enjoy an entire afternoon as a whole group down at Foss park. Students played on the playgrounds, chatted in the shade of the trees and enjoyed kicking soccer balls around on the turf field. It is so hard to believe that in just a few short weeks we will be closing the doors on our 2022-2023 school year together. The students we met in September have grown and achieved so much over 8 months, and we could not be any more proud! Read below for some of the fun activities they’ve participated in this mont

Mr Alex:

Comic Book club has been having a blast creating some pretty funny comic book art. Last week we explored the idea of creating a fantasy story using AI and then making the art to go with it. Hopefully, we can put together a full story that the children can take home in the next few weeks.

I Like to Move It has been enjoying the wonderful weather outside. We have played various games on our beautiful new basketball court and playground in the back, and students have enjoyed getting outside after a long day.

Pokemon Club has been catching them all lately! More kids than ever have learned to play the official card game. In the next few weeks, I will be announcing the Pokemon Championships. The winner, 2nd place and 3rd place will be winning a holographic card of their choice.

Miss Suri:

PreK has been doing a lot of learning this month. We started the month off by learning about our bodies. How do our lungs work, where does our food go, and how our bones and muscles help us to move! With the warm weather, we noticed more animals were showing up around our school and homes. We learned what habitats are and talked about different animal habitats we knew. Students talked about farm animals and animals we can have as pets in our houses. To end the month of May, students have been getting dirty and doing some planting. We learned how to care for the seeds we planted and have been helping to water the school garden. We are also enjoying our Wednesday dance parties that we started a few weeks ago.

Knitting club:

Your students continue to blow me away with their dedication to this club. Students are growing their patience levels as I bounce from student project to student project assisting. Our students are working on projects together and when I am unable to help, are coming together and helping each other solve problems. We have scarves, blankets and hand towels all being worked on and we can’t wait to see what we complete in the next few weeks.

Mr. T:

Soccer Club: In soccer club, students have been able to get outside and take advantage of the beautiful weather we have had recently. Students have learned proper shooting techniques and have gotten the chance to have fun while playing in scrimmages with their peers.

Retro Recess: Retro Recess Club takes kids back to the “gym class” of their parents, as we play “Old-School” Physical Education games on a weekly basis. The kids have especially enjoyed playing “Pac-Man Tag” in the gymnasium. This activity involves one tagger serving as the “ghost,” who has to try to tag other students. The one catch, however, is that students can only run on the lines painted in the gymnasium.

Master of Games: In Master of Games Club, students from Kindergarten-2nd grade have gotten the opportunity to compete in brand new games against each other. “Uno” continues to be a fan favorite, and it has been awesome to see kids of all ages competing fairly against one another.

Mr.Wilkins & Mr. Chris

Mr. Wilkins joined our team at the start of this month as our new 1st/2nd grade lead teacher. He works at the Healey as a building substitute during the day and as a team, he and Mr. Chris are having a great time with the kiddos in after-school. For origami club students have continued to practice their paper folding skills by creating fishies, jumping frogs, tulips and mushrooms.

Spring is here! We are loving the wonderful weather and already using it to our advantage! We are taking the kids out to the parks, bike path, gardens, and we finally get to do outdoor dismissal! We love to be outside! Here is a highlight of our clubs outside.

Accessory Club: stepping up our craft time with accessory club. We’re leanrng how to make some awesome accessories for our personal and school life. Kiddos have made book marks, door holders, pencil bags and more. Yes, it’s hard, but we’re learning how to build upon our already awesome skills and trying new things.

Lego Club: Did you know you can take leogs…anywhere. As it gets warmer, we’ve brought legos outside. We’re enjoying the spring time warm weather and taking our lego creations outside on the blacktop and in the garden. It gives us more terrain to work with! So many more fun ideas of what to build in lego club. What makes it easy is they are all in little portable take out containers! We get to take this show on the road! See us building outside on warm beautiful days.

BINGO! It’s a hot one, BINGO. You though the retirement community? Oh no, this hot game has the kiddos learning all the cool bingo board wins. Many of the kids get to take turns turing the cage and calling out the numbers. The kiddos learn number recognition in this club as well as get to play an amazing game. Of course, our favorite part is calling out “BINGO”!

Pokemon Palooza- the hot new club that we’ve all been waiting for. The kiddos are having a blast in this pokemon palooza club. Everything is pokemon. I mean everything. There is pokemon trivia, pokemon coloring, pokemon puppets, pokemon movement breaks, pokemon scavenger hunts, and pokemon bingo! Everything is pokemon. The kids can’t get enough of this pokemon club. I have a feeling this one will come back.

Even if May’s weather has not been so bright, it has not dampened East student’s spirits! We are well into our last session and we couldn’t be more psyched about the beautiful weather days here at East. Our students have been taking advantage of the warm days by doing homework and reading outside as well as enjoying some popsicles while chilling with their friends. We have some very exciting things happening this month!

To top off the great year and session we have had, we will be celebrating session 3 by having a Sweet Summer Blast Off Themed party with families and students on June 8th, 2023! All families are invited to attend to enjoy some ice pops and pizza with us.

Session 3 has kept the East After schoolers very busy and creative! The kids have been working on arts in craft making special gifts for mom. They had a choice to make either hearts, card or flowers for Mother's Day. They created their designs out of the fuse beads and they choose which colors they wanted to use. Some of the kids even created there designs from scratch! It was very exciting for them to surprise their loved ones with a gift they made for their mom's special day.

Many of the students have been able to explore the garden and plants to visualize the growth of flowers during this season. We got really creative and began to plant our own seeds in our ESCS garden, we can’t wait to see them grow and see our hard work pay off!

On Tuesday’s and Thursday, our 3-6th graders have been cheering on the East basketball team in the gymnasium. They are showing school spirit and pride for the awesome student players. We really enjoy using this time for our students to mingle with others from the school who are not in afterschool and more so, students from the surrounding Somerville schools. It is a great time for them to relax and enjoy after working hard on their daily school assignments.

As the weather gets warmer, we require that all students have sunblock applied before we go outside in afterschool. We have both spray and lotion and encourage hats and sunglasses as well. Sun safety is very important in afterschool and we take precautions seriously. Please ensure to pack a water bottle and some sunscreen in backpacks in order for all students to be able to enjoy the nice sunny weather. We are excited that the warm weather is upon us but, safety comes first!

May has been kind to us with warmer weather. After-school at the Capuano has taken advantage of the weather to spend extra time in the playground, getting fresh air and lots of exercise.

During May, in room 108, the class explored the solar system and learned about Mother’s Day. Ms. Silvana read books like Amazing Space Facts by Dinah L. Moche and The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn. The class learned the “Mr. Sun” song, made paper plate suns, and made lots of I love you Mom cards and other Mother’s Day cards. The children really enjoyed making cards for their moms.

In room 202, the class learned about zoo animals, birds, colors and community helpers. They did a giraffe craft, made paper plate foxes and made a hand heart with each child’s photo inside as a Mother’s Day craft. In the coming weeks, room 202 will learn about primary and secondary colors and community helpers. Q-tip paintings, crossing guard stop signs, and doctor’s bags are examples of crafts they will do connected to colors and community helpers.

In room 133, the children are fascinated by color by number animals. They like to do a color by number animal almost every day. They also learned about Mother’s Day and made cards and for their mothers. They read Peter Rabbit: A Present for Mom.

In room 218, they did May coloring, made a spring book, and made gifts for Mother’s day. They worked on a really special project for Mother’s Day: They planted marigolds in flowerpots that they decorated and painted for their mothers. They read books like “Sweet People Are Everywhere,” “The Surprised Garden,” “Mom Appreciation,” and “I am (Not) scared.”

After-school is coming to the close of the year with happy children doing projects reading books but also playing in the kitchen area, playing freeze dance, playing with sand, playing, playing, playing, and happy children laughing and having fun (with widely scattered boo-boos)!

Thank you!

The Kids Changing the World Club 🙂

Ms. Laura’s Clubs

During this month, Kids Changing the World kids have been making bookmarks with positive messages on them for the local library in order to encourage reading. They hung an indoor story walk that supports book reading freedom. Right now they are preparing for a raffle benefiting the New England Aquarium! Mad Science 2 kids participated in an airplane engineering challenge and constructed the longest popsicle stick extension from a table they could using balance and weight. In What Now Art Supplies, they learned how to make homemade crayons, paper and more. You Do You club did just that by making creations with paper, participating in group imaginative play and making elaborate domino constructions. You Can Do That kids learned ways to make secret messages. They talked about how translations influenced history with examples like the Rosetta Stone, the key to understanding Egyptian hieroglyphs and how cracking code during WW2 changed the course and length of the war.

In craft and Chat we have started making our own stuffed animals! Students sketched out what they would like to make and I was able to create a sewing pattern for them based on their sketches. We are looking forward to starting the sewing process and seeing what we can create.

We have been busy in the gardening club with this beautiful weather! Together we planted pansies, wildflowers, peas and cherry tomatoes in our community garden. Each student also began their own mini garden and got to choose if they wanted to grow vegetables or flowers, everything has sprouted and we love watching everything grow! It is so great to watch the kids tend to the garden and be proud of what they are growing from tiny seeds!

In Master Chef we love pairing something sweet with something healthy to spruce it up a bit. Pictured here we made apple nachos drizzled with chocolate sauce, caramel sauce and chocolate chips! This was a bigger hit than I first thought. In previous weeks we have made grilled cheese and cookies. We only have a few more weeks left, let’s see what we can do!

Ms. Kelly’s Clubs

Curious mind club has been having so much fun experimenting with textures and smells. Students have been able to create different textures of slime and have been able to explode a watermelon together.

In self love club students have been able to learn about how to control their impulses through playing musical chairs and giving each other chances to play a fair game.

In open studios club students have been able to create air clay creations. Students took two weeks to create their creations during week one and finished the second week with painting them. It’s been a great art club so far.

In constructors club students have been able to go outside and play together. We have been trying to take advantage of this great weather. The students have been attending the Kennedys basketball game during club and it has been a blast cheering on the Kennedy tigers.

In creative hearts clubs students have been able to create Mother’s Day gifts for the month of May. Our next project will be to create a collaborative art project together.

Thank you all so much for a fantastic year in After School! Your support and understanding, cooperation and kindness make it easy to come to work every day!

Hellos Families!

As the weather has begun to warm up and we’ve welcomed Spring, we have been spending a lot more time outside! We’ve started session three and it has brought fun new clubs and activities to occupy our time. This transition has also brought about a new spout of energy for the kiddos and staff!

Pre-K

This month Preschoolers are learning about farms and animals and what their habitats might look like. We are looking into the products we get from farm animals and  the sounds made by common farm animals. As a bonus we are learning about machinery that farmers use to make food for us.

Preschoolers are enjoying our fun  books and activities all  about Farm. They are also taking on the challenge of starting to independently read books during circle time.

Kindergarten

Our kinder friends are still improving, earning tickets and stickers like clockwork. It is an awesome time to touch upon their improving listening skills. Kiddos have built a routine and gained independence through helping set up and cleaning their centers. This routine helps recognize transition times, take responsibility for their messes and keeps our daily schedule running smoothly. It also gives the kids the opportunity to work together and let other friends lend a helping hand. Along with these expectations, mates are rewarded for their daily jobs through our ticket/sticker system and are rewarded with a sweet treat or prize at the end of each week.

Grades 1st-2nd

This group of kiddos have been working hard on earning their stickers/tickets to get a prize! They’ve been learning about kindness/sharing during reading time and some clubs such as Zen Zone and Free Spirits have even been using a Worry Monster. During SmashBros students got to use their minds to finish an escape room and then create their own escape rooms. The group has been trying to stay active with some hot lava yoga and LOTS of outdoor play in the nice weather.

Grades 3rd-6th

Our oldest group of friends have been enhancing their friendship skills with some group playground activities. Metro Rock has continued to be a crowd pleaser and fantastic incentive for the students. The students in Cooking Kids got to take time to learn about Dia de Los Muertos and have a yummy mexican treat to end the day. Friends in Veggie Circus have been using their creativity to out together various materials and create self portraits that come to life.

Hello Families and Friends!!

Happy May!

We hope you have all been enjoying the sunny weather and all of this pollen that has spread throughout our beautiful city. We are just a few days away from the last day of school and just weeks away from summer!

As we are all aware, our Pre-K friends have been having an exciting time in our new turf soccer field. This new space was an instant hit and gave us a perfect spot to lounge in the sun, kick a soccer ball around and practice our cartwheels. Everyday has been filled with activities ranging from Show & Tell to Bouquet Club, and we cannot forget our Circle time.

Let's get ready to introduce our soon to be up and coming 2nd and 3rd graders! I can promise you one thing, our friends never get tired in Afterschool. If we aren't reading then we are outside enjoying the weather, playing soccer and of course jamming out to Ms. Seana’s awesome playlist. Our friends have never stopped dancing, and rumor has it they are still dancing in school. In Ocean Club, Ms. Vanessa has been teaching about coral reefs and their ecological importance. Now I know you might think that Disney’s theme parks are the biggest and best theme parks but I can promise you they are not. In Lego Masters, our students decided to create a better theme park than Disney. During the summer make sure to purchase admission tickets to our very own Funtopia Castleland! We will be expecting everyone there.

Our older group is certainly enjoying the new outdoor space and taking advantage of the new dodgeball area (turf field) every opportunity they get! Our soccer scrimmages with NE Rush club feel much more official than when we were playing in the gym, inspiring a new generation of athletes to go pro when they grow up. Monopoly is a classic and Connect Four will always be a household favorite, but if you’re looking for something to spice up your board game night, look no further than Mr. Henry’s Master Games Club! The students have been working hard and having fun designing their own board games to rival the classics. If you’re looking for more entertainment, now is your chance to head over to Karaoke Club to catch some up and coming performers before they hit the world stage and sell out every show. Speaking of international tours, Around the World Club just wrapped up the European leg of their travels and will be heading to Asia next month to explore a new continent. Catch them if you can!
