Happy Holidays, everyone! As we enter this festive season, we’re reminded of the joy that comes from meaningful connections and the generosity of our community. At the same time, we know the holidays can feel busy, overwhelming, and a bit hectic. Amid the rush, we encourage you to pause, care for yourselves, and prioritize the well-being of you and your family. Seek support when you need it, and extend kindness to those who might benefit from an extra helping hand. We hope this season brings peace, warmth, and happiness to you and your loved ones. Enjoy the break, and we look forward to welcoming your kiddos back in the new year for more fun, learning, and excitement in Community Schools!

Happy December Argenziano families!! The winter season is officially upon us and we are embracing the cold weather outside all bundled up. We are wrapping up Session 1 clubs and excited for Session 2 clubs which start in the new year. We are also looking forward to spending time with family & friends over the upcoming winter break. Happy holidays and see you in the new year! Let’s see what each grade level is up to..
Parents/Guardians: Reminder: *NO AFTERSCHOOL on Tuesday 12/23*
With the colder temps, ensure your children have warm jackets etc. and please label all outdoor clothing, including hats & gloves. Items without name will be placed in lost and found.
Pre-K- Happy December! This past month, the Pre-K students have learned all about what colors are and put that into practice by painting a rainbow using only the primary colors. We also worked on our fine motor skills by folding origami sharks and coffee filter butterflies. Finally, we celebrated the upcoming winter season by cutting paper snowflakes and making our own "snow dough." Have a happy and safe holiday season, and we'll see you again in the new year!
K-2nd grades- In STEM club we’ve been learning about science, technology, engineering, and math! One week students became zoologists and learned about all the things animals need to survive. They then made beaver habitats out of shoe boxes, making sure they included everything a beaver might need. Another week students became paleontologists, digging for fossils, classifying/grouping shells, and thinking about what dinosaurs might have looked like. It’s been amazing to see their questions and observations over the course of Session 1! Students in the Rainbow Collage Club show their creativity by cutting and arranging magazine pictures to make bright, colorful collage art. Through this hands-on activity, students turn their ideas into artwork while exploring colors, patterns, and design. We look forward to continuing the Rainbow Collage Club after school next semester.
3rd-5th grades- Here in the Reading Corner club, students have the opportunity to read their favorite books while exploring the library. The students enjoy having the opportunity to choose any book from the library. The kids in groups 5 & 6 have been keeping busy with art, sports, and boardgames! They are also having fun continuing to play lots of soccer outside or in the gym. Even though it is freezing some days we get as much soccer/outside time as possible! They are looking forward to new clubs or returning favorites like Danger Wizards in the new year!

Hello families and a happy holiday season to you all! We had such an awesome first session of clubs that we concluded this past week with our family end of session potluck party. Thank you to those who were able to join as we celebrated all the students learned in their clubs. We had two great performances by our Veggie Circus club and enjoyed an assortment of snacks and treats provided by our amazing families. Students enjoyed activities and mingling with friends and family.
Our littlest learners spent this month learning about all things winter and holiday-related. They decorated snowmen following our first snow of the season, and have been working so hard at being kind to one another during play. Our K-2nd-grade group finished their comics and presented them to their class. We have slime very talented writers and illustrators in our classes! Puzzle club challenged themselves by working on a 1000-piece puzzle to wrap up the session! Our recycled crafts club made some absolute masterpieces using recycled materials this session, and some of our favorites this month were flowers and vehicles. Our World Travellers finished their session with trips to India, Egypt, and Sweden. For our oldest group of kiddos, their favorite part of the day remains free play out on the playground. Filling their afternoon with games of pretend or battles on the soccer field and basketball courts is what truly makes them happy. When it's time for clubs, we look forward to trivia games with Mr. T, soccer with Mr. Raf, and board games with Ms. Alexa. We’re so excited to introduce new clubs in the new year and wish everyone a restful break!

Happy December, everyone!! As the year comes to a close, our afterschool community is buzzing with excitement! December brings winter-themed activities, celebrations of kindness, and plenty of fun learning opportunities. Here’s what’s happening this month:
Our students have been exploring new activities, enjoying their clubs, and continuing to grow each and every day! Their energy and enthusiasm are contagious and truly help create an inspiring atmosphere for learning and self-growth! From learning to foster teamwork in Friendship Club, to participating in a variety of sports in Outdoor Movement club (When the weather permits), to students being able to use their imagination and role-playing in Danger Wizards, we hope our students have enjoyed their Session 1 clubs!
On Monday, December 22nd, we will be having our Winter Wonderland! Parents are welcome to join their kiddos for light food, refreshments, and a slideshow/recap of Session 1!
As we head into the holiday season, we want to express our gratitude to our amazing families. It has been a privilege to be a part of your child's growth, and we hope you all have a wonderful holiday season!

Happy Holidays, everyone! As always, our afterschool calendar at East Somerville is packed with activities, celebrations, and all the excitement that comes with the holiday season. Thank you to everyone who donated toward the pizza and to all the families who joined us for our Afterschool Family Potluck! It was a wonderful event filled with love, food, music, art, and craft activities. Amid all the festivities, we look forward to continuing our club activities, learning, and sharing lots of fun together.
This past month, our students wrapped up a full unit on gratitude. With the guidance of our afterschool teachers, they took time to reflect on the things they appreciate and created beautiful projects to express their love and creativity. By the end of the month, many of these pieces were proudly displayed on our office windows, classroom doors, and throughout the school. A heartfelt thank-you to our teachers, students, and families for making November such a meaningful month.
We are now in the final week of Session One, and students are eagerly anticipating the holidays and winter break. Clubs are closing out on a high note, and winter-themed activities will continue. We are excited to welcome everyone back for the start of Session Two on January 5th.
Our upcoming clubs will include returning favorites such as Soccer & Team Games, Buildwave, Art Spark Studio, Pokémon Art Creation, Cultura y Lengua, Superhero Mask Making, and Creative Crafters — along with new offerings like Arctic Explorers, Skillers Soccer, and more. A HUGE THANK YOU to our incredible afterschool teachers, our club providers who bring positive energy every day, and our main office team for helping make ESCS Afterschool such a fantastic program.
We also want to express our appreciation to all our families for your ongoing support. Our program thrives because of students who work hard, take pride in their learning, and enjoy being part of our afterschool community. When challenges arise, we are always able to come together with families to find positive solutions, something we never take for granted. Thank you!
Thank you so much for supporting Somerville Community Schools and its educators. Have a safe holiday season, and may it bring you joy and hope for the coming new year!

Season’s Greetings and Happy Winter!
Winter break is right around the corner and the after-school students at the Capuano are excited by the prospect of what is to come. We have been going to the gym more often this month because the weather is colder and it gets dark early, but when it’s warmer than usual and the sun is shining, we still try to get outside for some fresh air. Here at the Capuano, aside from playing, we have been doing puzzles, coloring, reading books about the month’s themes, and doing a variety of crafts.
Some of our themes in December have been Gratitude/Thankfulness, Transportation, Weather, and the Ocean. Teachers have been reading books like “Freight Trains in Action” by Adele Richardson, “How Weather Works” by Patricia Armentrout, and “Ocean Life” by Jill McDonald. After reading these books, children made gratitude flowers, paper plate fish, umbrellas, and weather wheels, along with various other crafts.
The staff at the Capuano school would like to wish families a happy and healthy winter season. We hope everyone bundles up against the cold and enjoys the upcoming winter break with their family. We look forward to seeing what the new year brings us when it is time for school again in 2026.

Dear Kennedy Families,
As the first session draws to a close, we reflect on the numerous joyful and memorable experiences shared with our students over the past few months. Our Kennedy afterschool program has also expanded, welcoming two new staff members to our team: Jenissa Aybar has joined us as the lead teacher for our second graders, and Damaris Mendez is the new assistant teacher for our Pre-K group.
This month, the children have thoroughly enjoyed a variety of creative and engaging activities. They explored their artistic sides by creating and coloring intricate mindful line drawings, experimented with rhythm through drumming sessions, and developed their spatial reasoning by constructing miniature paper scenes. Additionally, students demonstrated their compassion by crafting bows for shelter dogs and expressing their creativity through model magic characters. The level of engagement and enjoyment has been remarkable! The students' artistic talents were also showcased in a collaborative art project for our after-school bulletin board, which they decorated in a Snoopy-inspired winter theme, complete with snowmen, hats, gloves, and snowflakes. Students have also learned the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship through team sports, learning to adhere to specific rules while playing. They also experienced the excitement of science by constructing erupting volcanoes, an activity that was met with great enthusiasm. To promote physical well-being, we've incorporated warm-up exercises, such as sprints and jumping jacks, before engaging in sports, emphasizing the importance of preparing the body for physical activity. Despite the cold weather, we've made sure to bundle up and enjoy outdoor activities whenever possible.
Wishing you all a delightful, safe, and warm winter break. We eagerly anticipate welcoming everyone back in the new year!

We made it! December flew by faster than a child hearing the words “snack time.” As we head into the holiday season, we wanted to take a moment to reflect, laugh a little, and say a big thank you for an amazing few months together.
December was full of energy, creativity, teamwork, and just a tiny bit of controlled chaos (the fun kind, we promise). Our students showed up every day ready to learn, play, and remind us that socks apparently do go missing in mysterious ways.
As our clubs wrapped up for the season, we couldn’t be prouder of the hard work and enthusiasm we saw: Art Club turned imagination into masterpieces—some abstract, some festive, and all deserving of fridge space at home. Buildwave / LEGO Club engineered creations so impressive that we briefly considered asking them to help renovate the building. Sports Club brought teamwork, energy, and lots of “I wasn’t out!” moments, all while building confidence and sportsmanship. Other Clubs gave students a space to explore interests, try new things, and discover talents they didn’t even know they had. Each club was a place where students felt safe, supported, and excited to learn—and that’s something truly special.
As we close out the year, we want to thank you, our families, for trusting us with your children each day. Your support, kindness, and partnership mean more than you know. Afterschool is not just a program—it’s a community, and we are so grateful to be part of yours.
To our students: thank you for the laughter, the creativity, the big feelings, the bigger personalities, and the daily reminders of why we do this work. You make every afternoon brighter.

Happy December!
Let the snow pile up and the hot cocoa warm you up throughout the day—it’s that time of year when the cold settles in. Here in afterschool, our students never freeze because we keep the fun going indoors (and yes, enjoy the free heat!). Our Pre-K group has been living their best lives, going from playing Fishy Fishy in the gym to building castles of their own creation. Our 1st–2nd graders have been having a blast in Buildwave, solving the mystery of the missing cheese with LEGOs, and uncovering the culprit behind the ultimate cookie snaggler. Spoiler alert: it was Mr. Josh stealing the cookies from everyone! Meanwhile, our oldest kiddos have been diving deep into Magic The Gathering and exploring the wonderful world of imagination. They’ve even been hard at work creating what may just be the best comic book in the world.
Reminders for Families
Please see our WSNS Afterschool class on the TalkingPoints for Families app for the quickest updates. Email Josh or Seana if you have any questions about the app.
As the weather cools, please remember to send your child with a warm jacket for outdoor play, we’ll be spending as much time outside as possible.
Pack extra clothes for younger children in case of accidents or emergencies.
Afterschool does not have its own Lost and Found. We use the Lost and Found located outside the main office. Please be sure to check it regularly!
