What is Project SEARCH?
Project SEARCH is an extraordinary life transition program for young adults with disabilities. It gives individuals who want to work a chance to explore careers and develop transferable job skills in a structured and accommodating environment.
Designed as an internship program, Project SEARCH places participants in real-world situations where they learn all aspects of gaining and maintaining a job. Large employers, such as Sanford Health, host the program and teach new work skills on-site.
The goal of Project SEARCH is to equip young adults with the skills they need to work in the community after the program is over. To do this, a series of internship rotations are developed for each participant. Placements are made based on individual interests, strengths, skills, and department availability. Any on-the-job coaching, accommodations and adaptations they need are provided so they can thrive in their roles.
This internship program is provided to individuals through a partnership between Project SEARCH, the Sioux Falls School District, Sanford Health and South Dakota's Division of Rehabilitation Services.
Young adults who have completed all academic requirements for graduation from high school may apply for enrollment in Project SEARCH. Participants must be 18 to 21 years old and qualify for transition services through their IEP. See the FAQ section for more information.
