CTE Academy Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get enrolled in a CTE course and what do I do if I am not sure what I am interested in?
Students register for CTE Academy classes through their home high school. If you do not know which classes would be best for you, we have a class called “CTE Academy Exploration”. This Exploration class will introduce students to all content areas offered at the CTE Academy.
What time do you offer classes?
We offer classes during three block times:
Block 1- 7:45-9:25
Block 2- 9:40-11:20
Block 3- 1:20-3:00
When can I start to take classes at the CTE Academy?
We offer classes to students in grades 9-12.
How many high school credits will I earn?
Students earn one (1.0) full credit each semester for 1 CTE Academy class. In addition, a student may earn another .5 credit of English if they take an integrated class alongside a CTE Academy class. We offer Speech, Creative Writing, English for College Readiness, and Research & Technical Writing.
What type of credit will my student earn while attending the CTE Academy?
Depending on the class, it can be a CTE elective, a Fine Art credit, or a 4th Science credit.
Can my student earn college credit at CTE?
Yes, there are dual credit and concurrent post high school credit opportunities available in various content areas.
Does attending the CTE Academy cost anything?
Not if your student attends a Sioux Falls public high school. If you are out-of-district, you must talk to your home school. However, in some courses, there may be a fee for college credit or individual project/ event costs.
Is there a certain type of student that CTE classes are intended for?
No, anyone in high school can attend the CTE Academy, whether you are planning on going to a technical college, a 4-year institution, in-state, out-of-state, or going straight into the world of work. We have something for everyone, no matter what type of learner you are.
How important is attendance at the CTE Academy?
Because we run 100-minute blocks, attendance is critical. Students earn one (1.0) full credit in their content area, with the exception of Integrated English which is an additional .5 credit, each semester. This means that every class period you are absent, you are actually missing 2 regular class periods at the home school, in addition to whatever content/practice that was completed that day. As part of the Sioux Falls School District, the CTE Academy follows the Sioux Falls school calendar and attendance policies.
How does my student get from their home school to their class at CTE?
The School District provides, free of charge to Sioux Falls students, a bus from their home school to the CTE Academy and back again. This bus service will get the student to their class and back again on time for the next class or end of day activities.
How does a CTE class benefit my student?
CTE classes are South Dakota Department of Education approved classes that allow your student to experience career fields before heading off to college, technical school, or the workforce. All of the CTE Academy classes offer hands-on learning opportunities.
