A school counselor is a members of the education team that gives valuable assistance to students by helping them with their academic goals, social and personal development, and career development. They help ALL students address developmental needs. Comprehensive School Counselors use ASCA's Mindsets & Behaviors to improve academic, social/emotional and career development in K-12 students.
Acting as an advocate on behalf of ALL students
Creating, organizing, and delivering classroom guidance lessons revolving around academic, social/emotional, and career development in Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade.
Coordinating MAPs, Smarter Balanced Assessments, South Dakota Science Assessments, and NAEP testing along with the alternative tests (MSAA and SD Science Alternate Assessment).
Collaborating with Administrators, Teachers, Staff, and Parents to better improve students' school experiences.
Collaborating with Administrators, Teachers, and Staff to intervene during crisis situations and mediate conflict between students.
Encouraging the exploration of future education and career planning.
Helping individuals to develop healthy relationships with their peers, school staff, and family.
Providing resources and skills to cope with academic or social/emotional challenges.
Providing bullying prevention and awareness throughout Webster Area Elementary and Middle School
Bi-weekly lessons are taught to Pre-K through 8th grade levels. The lessons are preventative, developmentally appropriate, and address academic, career, emotional and social growth.
Using a psycho-educational model, small groups help students reflect on their experiences, recognize they are not alone, and enhance relationship, intrapersonal, learning & behavioral skills. An Informed Consent form will be sent home to parents upon interest of group counseling services by parent, teacher, or student.
When appropriate, the school counselor meets with individual students on a short-term basis. These sessions can be for academic planning or of a social/emotional nature.
