I have sent home pictures on September 18th. Please notify me if you place your order online or if you are not ordering. Money can be sent to school in the provided envelope if you choose to go that route. I have a tracking sheet that I have to complete and turn in to the office. I become quite the olympic athlete chasing these down! ;)  Orders are due Monday, September 25.

What we are Learning

Math - We are learning place value and how it is a stepping stone in solving harder math problems. We are really focusing on story problems and how these situations could happen in real life and how we could use math to solve it! Skip counting to 1,000 in a variety way is a good way to building competency in place value number sense.

Practice Probe: "Start at 87 and skip count by 10s."

Reading - We just finished our first bend of unit 1, which is "preparing a reader". In this unit we focused on fluency and keeping track of our books. We did a lot of learning with post it notes and it has helped them think while we read. Next up is learning how to tackle tricky words in our books.

Practice Probe: Next time you're reading, stop them at a random page and have the retell the part they just read. At the end of the book you can put all the retells together to retell the whole book!

Writing - We are underway in our Writing Bootcamp. This week we will start constructing a riddle about oursevles. These will be hung at conferences for you to see!

Phonics - We are reviewing vowel teams and learning newer, more complex vowels teams. We are using what we know about vowel team patterns to spell new words. This skill will be used throughout our writing units in the future.

Practice Probe: Use the word "feel" (and the vowel team ee) to spell 5 new words.

Social Studies - We are review the Seven Habits of Happy Kids with application and discussion. Students are presented with problems and as a class we work through them and decide how a leader with these habits would respond. We play lots of games that give us the opportunity to practice these habits in real life settings.

Practice Probe: Ask your child to name the steps of a routine you follow in your house (bedtime routine, morning routine)
