A Reflection on How Our Actions Spread Love or Hurt
■ Purpose
To help students recognize that every action—positive or negative—creates ripples that spread beyond the person immediately involved. This connects to the stories in the HeartStrings Series (The Kármán Line, Lost & Found, and Team Hoyt), showing how love, sacrifice, and endurance impact others.
■ Materials
• Printed ripple templates
• Colored pencils or markers
• Pen or pencil
• Optional: string or tape to hang finished 'ripples' on the wall
■ Directions (Follow these on your own)
1. Picture the Ripple
Close your eyes and imagine dropping a pebble into a still pond. Watch how the ripples spread outward — one action affects many. Now, think about how your words, choices, and actions can ripple through the lives of others, just like in the pond.
Example: When Dick Hoyt ran the Ironman for his son, his love created ripples that inspired millions. When Sarah’s family in The Kármán Line learned to let go, their acceptance rippled through generations. When the dinosaur in Lost & Found unraveled himself to save his friend, that sacrifice became a wave of love.
2. Label Your Ripple
Turn to your ripple template on the last page.
• Center (The Splash): Write or draw an action you’ve done or witnessed recently that affected someone else.
It can be kind or hurtful — be honest.
• Middle Ring (The Immediate Ripples): Describe who was directly affected by that action.
• Outer Rings (The Widening Ripples): Describe the indirect effects — who else might have felt the outcome later on? Think about how that ripple continues.
3. Decorate your Ripple
Now imagine you’re starting a new ripple — this time with kindness, encouragement, or love. On the back of the very last page write:
• One action you can take this week to create a positive ripple in your school or family.
• Who will feel it first?
• How might it spread further?
