π Think about your future career goals
π Consider college requirements if you plan to attend
βοΈ Challenge yourself, but keep your schedule balanced
β Ask your pathway or CTE teacher about pathway opportunities
Choose backup electives carefully - you might need them
Your career academy pathway helps guide your elective choices
Some courses have prerequisites, grade level requirements, and space limitations.
How is my academy related to a pathway of study?
Think of your academy as your "home base" at KHS β it's the broader community you'll belong to based on your interests and career goals. Within each academy, there are specific pathways that help focus your learning journey:
For example:
If you're in the STEM Academy, you might follow the Engineering pathway or Computer Science pathway
If you're in Sustainable Communities, you could focus on Medical Services or Culinary Arts
If you're in Creative Arts & Leadership, you might pursue Business or Teaching
Is it possible to take a course outside of my pathway of study and academy?
Yes! While your academy provides a focused direction for your studies, you can still explore other interests. Here's what you should know:
Priority enrollment in pathway courses goes to students in that academy
You can request courses from other academies if:
There's space available in the class
You meet any prerequisites
It fits in your schedule
You're still taking your required pathway courses
Remember: Your academy choice helps guide your journey, but it doesn't limit your ability to explore other interests. Talk to your counselor about how to balance your pathway requirements with other courses that interest you!
Here are some real examples:
A STEM Engineering student might take Culinary as an elective because they're interested in opening up a restaurant
A Creative Arts & Leadership student in the Teaching pathway could take Medical Services classes if they're considering a career in school nursing
A Sustainable Communities student in Culinary Arts might enroll in Marketing to learn about promoting their future restaurant
What if I want to change academies?
Yes, you can change academies! Your initial academy choice isn't a permanent commitment. Here's what you need to know:
When can I change?
The best time to change academies is during the registration process for the next school year
Changes between quarters or semesters are more challenging and may limit your course options
Steps to change your academy:
Talk to your current counselor about why you want to make the change
Meet with academy/pathway teachers in your new area of interest
In Step 2 of the registration form, choose your new academy home
Get parent/guardian approval
Your counselor will help you plan a new course sequence
Things to consider:
Some pathway courses build on each other, so changing academies might mean:
Starting a new sequence of pathway courses
Possibly needing to take summer classes to catch up
Adjusting your graduation plan
Think about why you want to change:
Have you discovered a new career interest?
Are you struggling with current pathway courses?
Have you learned about different opportunities?
Example: Kai started in the Creative Arts & Leadership Academy but discovered a passion for veterinary science after taking Marine Science. During registration for his junior year, he worked with his counselor to switch to the Sustainable Communities Academy. His counselor helped him plan out the required courses he'd need to take to complete the Medical Services pathway before graduation.
