HealthSmart is a skills-based health education program that empowers students to think, choose, and act in healthy ways. This curriculum is aligned to the National Health Education Standards which our HIDOE has adopted in 2021.
There are 3 no-cost options currently available to access health education curriculum.
A three-credit professional development course titled “Sexual Health Education: Foundations and Anatomy (online)” SY 2024-2025 is an online professional learning opportunity that focuses on (1) teaching sexuality and answering questions and (2) teaching sexual and reproductive anatomy. Enrollment in this course will be limited and provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to the limited class size, preference for enrollment will be given to participants who are currently responsible for (1) delivering sexual health education instruction to students, which includes puberty education instruction at the upper elementary level, or (2) training, coaching, or other implementation support to classroom teachers who deliver sexual health education instruction to students. Participants who are interested in taking this course must attend the Course Orientation Session and complete the Registration Interest Form. The course instructor will approve and enroll participants on an individual basis.
Interested participants are responsible for completing this form as one of the enrollment eligibility requirements. The information in this form will be used to determine enrollment in course Sexual Health Education: Foundations & Anatomy SY25-26.

Priority Enrollment
Enrollment in each learning object instance will be limited to a maximum of 10 participants and provided on a first-come, first-served basis to teachers who work in the Hawaii State Department of Education. Due to the limited class size, preference for enrollment will be given to participants who are currently responsible for (1) delivering sexual health education instruction to students, which includes puberty education instruction at the upper elementary level, or (2) training, coaching, or providing other implementation support to classroom teachers who deliver sexual health education and/or sexual violence prevention curriculum to students .
A three-credit professional development course titled “Level Up PE: Understanding the Why, Purpose & Engagement in PE (Level 1)" will be available across different complex-areas, to teachers who provide physical education instruction to elementary and secondary schools. Click here for course flier.
This course is for PE teachers ready to reconnect with their purpose, refine their instructional skills, and elevate their practice. Using the Japanese concept of Ikigai, you'll discover your personal "why" in physical education. You'll then align your teaching with the SHAPE America Guidelines and apply Dr. Robert Pangrazi's principles to create a proactive classroom management routine that maximizes student engagement.Through self-assessment, video analysis, and reflection, this course helps you develop a purposeful, effective, and confident teaching style. The ultimate goal is to transform your approach and create a lasting positive impact on students.

The fourth cohort of Project ALOHA's (Advancing Leadership Opportunities for Hawaiian, Asian American, and Pacific Islanders in Adapted Physical Education), will start in January 2026. If you are interested in a FREE master's degree, please see the information below:
- The Project is lead by Dr. Nathan Murata, co-Director Dr. Allison Tsuchida, and practicum supervisor Dr. John Solomon. Project ALOHA is a 5-year grant from the US Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs. We will be funding a total of 40 scholars (8 per year) over the course of the 5 years. Funding will cover expenses related to the 1-year MS in KRS, with an emphasis in Adapted Physical Education, degree which may include things like books, tuition, and some travel for neighbor island, Guam, and Saipan scholars.
- The one-year program consists of 30 credits, spread out over the course of one full calendar year, to start in January (6 credits in Spring, 18 credits in Summer, and 6 credits in Fall). Courses that are held in the Fall and Spring semesters will be conducted via online asynchronous format. The summer sessions will be held in person at UH Manoa and will be both intensive and accelerated (6-8 weeks). Scholars will need to pass a comprehensive exam and the APENS exam prior to completion of the program. Full commitment to the program will be required from scholars (e.g., coaching, travel, etc. should not interfere with attendance or coursework).
- To qualify you need to be a certified PE teacher, teaching PE full-time, in a P/K-12 setting, in a school serving students with disabilities.
- There is a two-year service obligation for those who qualify and go through the Project.
- Admission Requirements
Must have graduated from an accredited, four-year institution of higher education recognized by the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM)
Currently employed full time in a P/K-12 school serving students with disabilities
An Undergraduate Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
An official transcript from each post-secondary institution attended.
A written statement of objectives as part of your application - copy also to be sent to KRS (Attn: Dr. Tsuchida)

A 4-part PD series for health & physical education (HPE) is being planned to build a professional learning network for HPE educators from grades K-12. Each session is optional, 1-hour, non-credit, and virtual.
Desired Outcomes:
Enhanced Instructional Strategies: Participants will gain new, practical instructional strategies and innovative ideas for integrating health and physical education concepts, leading to more engaging and effective lessons.
Increased Professional Collaboration & Support: Teachers will develop a stronger sense of community and support by regularly connecting with peers, sharing challenges, and celebrating successes.
Participants may attend any or all sessions. Sessions may be utilized as PD events on one’s EES IPDP and used towards 21-hour PD at each
school administrator's discretion.
