Aloha Leihoku Elementary ‘Ohana!!
Leihoku needs your help!!!
It’s time to get our School Community Council up and running and we need you!!! These councils, referred to as SCCs, were instituted by the Hawaii State Legislature in 2004 in an effort to support school improvement through increased community involvement in our schools. They are a requirement of every Hawaii DOE school and I see this council as being an opportunity for me to keep myself accountable to the teachers, staff, parents, and community members who are invested in the success of our students.
SO...... I need volunteers/ nominees!!!!
What would your commitment be? Attend the following meetings, ask questions, and give your honest feedback!! All meetings will take place in the Principal’s conference room.

Subject: Sharing Accurate Information About Our Community
Aloha Leihoku ‘Ohana,
We're reaching out to you following our wonderful ‘Ohana Night on February 27, 2025. It was a
fantastic evening of connection and learning, and we were especially grateful to have the Wai’anae
Coast Comprehensive Health Center’s (WCCHC) Smoking Cessation Program join us to share valuable
resources about the dangers of vaping.
We understand that a recent social media post featuring a photograph from the WCCHC booth has
caused some concern. The booth displayed a poster indicating confiscated vapes from young students,
with the intention of raising awareness about the prevalence of vaping in our broader community. It's
important to clarify that this poster represented confiscated items from multiple other
elementary schools in the area, not from Leihoku Elementary.
We want to take this opportunity to celebrate our Leihoku students. They consistently demonstrate
responsible behavior and live up to the high expectations we set for them. We are incredibly proud of
each and every one of our students and of their positive contributions to our school community.
We recognize that social media can be a powerful tool for communication, and we appreciate the
desire to share information. However, it's also crucial that we all strive to share information accurately
and responsibly. Misinterpretations, even unintentional ones, can lead to unnecessary worry and
confusion. Misinformation not only has the potential to harm our school, but also our students.
We believe this is a wonderful opportunity to model responsible social media use for our children. If
adults in our community do not use social media with kindness and honesty, how can we expect our
children to do so? By verifying information before sharing, we can ensure that our online
conversations are constructive and supportive.
We encourage you to reach out to us directly if you have any questions or concerns. We are always
happy to provide accurate information and address any misunderstandings. A quick phone call, email,
or even a conversation with a booth representative at an event can make a big difference.
We are committed to maintaining a safe, supportive, and positive learning environment for all our
students. We value our partnership with you and appreciate your understanding and cooperation as
we work together to promote accurate and responsible communication.
Mahalo for your continued support of Leihoku Elementary School.
Aloha No,
Rebecca K. Gebreyesus, Principal
