Identifying Online Trolls:

Online trolls are people like who make fake social media accounts that work to spread misinformation. This Youtube video is an interview with a professional troll Dmitri, who was paid to spread misinformation during the last US election. One way you can improve your digital detective skills is to learn how to identify trolls so you can minimize their impact. Try this Spot the Troll quiz (bit.ly/3mDQEc8) to see if you can identify the trolls from the real accounts, and learn about the clues that you can use to help identify trolls you meet online.

Online Resource: Newspaper Print Replica

The Honolulu Star Advertiser Print Replica is a fully digital version of the printed product that you can access from your computer. We have access to this resource for free thanks to the Newspapers in Education (NIE) program. The print replica has many additional features such as listen to the article, e-notify, and social media sharing. Here is the link to the page you can access the Print Replica: http://hawaii-newspaper.com/nie/kalaheo-high-school/ You can also find the link to this resource on the library’s database page on the Kalaheo High School Website.

It is password protected. (password: kalaheomustangs)

I created a short tutorial video to show how to access this great free resource and demonstrated some of the features mentioned.

Sora & Beanstack: Reading over the break

This week, I'm sending a refresher video on how to use SORA to read online. SORA is the app we use to access the eBooks & eAudiobooks on the Shared DOE collection. Because Kalaheo High School is at the highest level, we have access to the whole K-12+ collection, including kids books and adult/professional books.

SORA is great because you can also add in the Hawaii State Public Library (HSPLS) and have access to the eBooks from their collection too. Libby (the HSPLS eBook app) does not have the capability to add the DOE's collection. Using SORA will consolidate the library eBooks in one location.

SORA can be accessed from your Chromebook/computer through the regular browser at soraapp.com/ OR you can download the app to your mobile device. The app itself is free and easy to use. Books can also be sent from the browser/app to your Kindle device.
