The Foundations of Specially Designed Instruction presentation
This module introduces the foundations of Specially Designed Instruction (SDI). The presentation will focus on the three critical components of developing SDI: the instructional adaptation of content, methodology, and delivery. Examples of SDI for various student needs will be included to give an opportunity to apply content learned to student scenarios.

All Students Can Learn to Read: Using the Science of Reading to Improve Student Outcomes
presentation
This module focuses on the research that underlies the foundation of reading. The presentation provides information about the science of reading using Scarborough’s Reading Rope; identifying the root causes of reading problems, and learning effective high-quality reading instructional practices.
This module provides an overview of interventions for Tier II, Tier III, and Special Education services. It also provides individuals the opportunity to learn appropriate data collection methods within the student support process that can be implemented in the classroom to inform instructional decisions. In addition, the module also covers how to use baseline data to write effective IEP goals.
Collaborative Teaching: Discovering the Power of Two
This module provides an overview of the best collaborative teaching practices. It includes critical information about the Roles & Responsibilities, Six Collaborative Teaching Approaches, Accommodations vs. Modifications, Engagement, Differentiation, and Collaborative Planning Tools.
The Excellence Modules were created through a joint effort by the Office of Curriculum and Instructional Design (OCID), the Office of Student Support Services (OSSS), and the Office of Talent Management (OTM). The eight (8) webinar sessions were created to provide professional development on blended instruction and a distance learning environment. In addition to the eight (8) 1-hour webinar recordings, additional resources were developed by teachers to make the connection between theory and action. The additional resources will show how the strategies and tips that you will learn through the modules can actually be implemented into your own classroom!
This module reviews the purpose and benefits of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). The presentation provides an overview of the principles of UDL and demonstrates how teachers can use UDL as a framework for developing effective online and hybrid instruction. Teachers will learn specific strategies to create engaging and accessible instruction for all students, including students with IEPs and English Learners.
In this module, teachers will review the purpose and benefits of formative assessments. They will learn how to use tech tools to embed formative assessments into their synchronous and asynchronous instruction to assess student learning, provide timely feedback, increase student engagement, and adjust instruction based on student performance. Practical examples are included for immediate instructional use.
This tutorial provides teachers with guidance for targeting IEP Goals via distance learning. It also provides teachers with a variety of resources about supporting diverse learners across a range of service delivery models (i.e., face-to-face, synchronous, and asynchronous).
The purpose of this tutorial is to provide teachers and related services providers with guidance and resources for addressing student skill loss that may have occurred during school closure, and to provide strategies to accelerate student learning. This tutorial also outlines the procedure for aligning appropriate interventions, at the appropriate level of intensity to target specific areas of need of students with IEPs. This session includes a review of effective instructional practices, explicit instruction, instructional routines, and evidence-based interventions.
This presentation provides information on how to address learning loss due to the pandemic through the Hawaii Multi-Tiered System of Supports and high-leverage instructional practices. Additionally, this presentation provides step-by-step guidance and key considerations for assessment, instruction, and student monitoring to assist educators in accelerating learning for all students when they begin the new school year. The course consists of four sessions; each session is approximately 15 minutes in length.
