Services

The Hawaii Department of Education believes that students who have visual impairments, including blindness can communicate, explore the world they live in, and accomplish their individual goals to be successful in life. We promote equity, excellence, and innovation for students that have visual impairments, including blindness.

Statewide Supports

• Functional Vision, Learning Media, and other essential assessments for students with visual impairments including blindness

• Yearly reporting of updates to the Federal Blind Census 

• Organization and submission of orders to the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) using Federal Quota funds allocated from the Federal Blind Census

• Facilitation of professional learning opportunities, community service projects, specialized implementation training, and case-by-case consultation

• Guidance on ACT 254 implementation and provision of instructional materials in an accessible format.

Do you have a desire to work with students with visual impairments?

Portland State University offers teacher endorsements in both the Visual Impaired Learner Program and Orientation and Mobility. There are scholarship tuition stipends available for eligible students.
