To apply for federal student aid, such as federal grants, work-study, and loans, you need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Completing and submitting the FAFSA is free and gives you access to the largest source of financial aid to pay for college.
In addition, many states and colleges use your FAFSA information to determine your eligibility for state and school aid, and some private financial aid providers may use your FAFSA information to determine whether you qualify for their aid.
Create an account (FSA ID)
An FSA ID is a username and password you need to sign the FAFSA form online. Both the student and parent must create an FSA ID in order to submit the FAFSA. It will be your signature when submitting. Click here to create an FSA ID.
Click "Create an Account".
***You will need to know your Social Security Number in order to create your FSA ID. DO NOT use your school email. Make sure to write down ALL of your information and keep it safe where you can always find it: username, password, and security questions/answers. Your FSA ID will last FOREVER.
Start the FAFSA application form
Go to fafsa.gov to start your application for the FAFSA.
TIP: It's recommended that the student starts the FAFSA form first.
Fill out the Student Demographics section
This is where you provide information, such as your name, date of birth, SSN, etc.
List the schools you want to send your FAFSA information to.
In the School Selection, add every school you're considering, even if you haven't applied or been accepted yet.
You can add up to 10 schools at a time.
Answer the dependency status questions
In the dependency status section, you will be asked different questions to determine whether you are required to to provide parent information on the FAFSA form.
Fill out the Parent Demographics section
This is where your parent(s) will provide information about your parent(s). You must report their information if you were determined to be a dependent student in the dependency section.
Supply your financial information
Here is where you and your parent(s) (if applicable) will provide your financial information.
If you use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT), it allows you to import your IRS tax information into the FAFSA form. Using this tool may reduce the amount of paperwork you need to provide to your school.
Sign and submit your FAFSA form
You're not finished with the FAFSA form until you (and your parent, if you're a dependent student) sign it. The best way to sign your FAFSA form is online with your FSA ID.
Once you've submitted your FAFSA, it may take a few days for it to process. Once it's done processing, make sure to print out your Student Aid Report (SAR) and drop it off the College & Career Center!
