In India, why are STEM educational opportunities different for boys versus girls?

What can be done to improve the educational gap earlier in education and what effect would that have on creating gender equity in STEM? How does the society and community affect the equity of gender in education? What changes/improvements have taken place due to the efforts of various STEM programs?

Being a passionate student of the STEM field, I would like to research how STEM is taught and propagated to children in other countries. I would like to find out what can be done to improve the grade school STEM programs in India and if there have been any improvements in the past 10 years after the birth of smart and highly efficient technology. In addition, I would like to look into if STEM is taught differently in co-ed schools and gender-segregated schools. I would also be interested in interviewing male and female STEM professionals to see how different their opportunities and educational environment was growing up.
