I have been taking Latin for the past four years, and I absolutely love it. Ms. Song was my Latin teacher for my Freshman and Sophomore, and now senior year. Ms. Song is one of my favorite teachers ever! She is always super patient and kind, she also comes up with the most creative games and projects so that there is never a dull moment. Junior year I had Ms. Jordan as my Latin teacher. Mrs. Jordan is so much fun! She is always is bringing up exciting stories about Roman gods or where English words come from. Mrs. Jordan always engages with her class and pushes us to test our knowledge which has not only helped me to do better in Latin class but in English too.
I have been speaking, reading, and writing German since I moved to Switzerland in 2014. Because of German, I was able communicate in a foreign country, this made big tasks like making friends, traveling, or even, simply, ordering food much more easier and achievable. When I moved back to the United States in 2018, I took a long term break from German, however in 2020 I began practicing again for the AP German Exam which I passed with a four. I was very proud of myself for that because it required relearning tense, conjugations, cases, gender things I have not practiced in a very long time. Learning German at such a young age helped me to understand the value and beauty of language, something I continue to implement in Latin and in whatever language I attempt to learn next.
I have always had a love for the environment. I love the rawness of it, the lawlessness, and I love all that it provides for the human population. However, our home is also dying because of what we have taken from it. With this in mind, I needed to learn more. My senior year, I signed up for AP Environmental Science and have gained so much knowledge about how this planet operates. I have learnt about how ocean currents perpetuate the creation of garbage patches, how industry leads to land degradation, sediment accumulation, and carbon emissions. However, more importantly I have learnt solutions. Simple actions such as turning off the lights when we leave a room to big actions such as land reclamation after surface mining slowly but surely makes a difference in the health of our plant.
Capstone is a full year course that encourages its students to tackle one of the United Nations 17 Global Goals via a year long project. These projects are subjective to the individual and can really be in regard to any topic of their choosing so long as they can tie it back to a Global Goals. For my capstone project, I looked at the factors that make the transition out of poverty into self-sufficiency so difficult for single mothers. To learn my, check out the Global Research Tab.
DECA is an organization/club that prepares high schoolers and college students to enter the world of business through competitions that incorporate marketing, finance, entrepreneurship, and hospitality and management. With DECA I did the virtual fashion business challenge. The challenge was to virtually start and grow a retail business to as big of a company as possible. This meant using the software they gave the participants to identify and track trends, remodel your store to attract new business, and post on social media to gain a following. From this experience I learnt the value of marketing and the impacts it can have on a business. Though, my partner and I didn't get very far in the competition it was a great learning experience and something we are eager to try again next year.
