New tax preparer volunteers should register for one 2 day session of New Preparer training.
Training for new preparers includes two in-person training sessions plus about 90 minutes of recorded videos to watch from home. Your trainers are VITA Site Coordinators with several years of experience at tax sites and training volunteers. We focus on the topics and scenarios seen most frequently at our tax sites.
Get started by watching our welcome video for an overview of the training process and what to expect at the tax sites.
Day One: 9AM-2PM
This training includes tax site procedures, interviewing practice, basic tax law and sample tax scenarios.
On your own time:
Watch these tax law videos covering Income, Deductions and Tax Credits
Day Two: 9AM-5PM
During this training we'll learn to use TaxSlayer software and complete a sample return together. Next, everyone will start the IRS Certification exam, with trainers there to help you along the way. Trainers will stay until 5PM so you can complete the exam in person that day, or finish at home. Additional support is available through Zoom testing sessions.
On your own time:
View state and local tax training videos. These videos include tax law and how to complete the returns in TaxSlayer. We recommend viewing these trainings after completing the federal training and before starting at the tax site.
Free parking is available at both training locations
