At Rustic Lane our PAL Leaders are made up of thirteen, 5th and 6th-grade students. These students had to apply for this special position. They also received teacher and peer recommendations who as well as underwent an interview process. Our PAL leaders are present on campus as a friendly face that welcomes students and makes them feel welcome. They give new students tours around our school, help with school events, and are being trained in restorative circles, mentoring, and conflict-resolution skills.
The Buddy Bench by Patty Brozo (illustrated by Mike Deas) shares a simple message: “Buddy Bench = Nobody Alone.”
Inspired by real buddy benches, the story follows students who create a bench where kids can sit if they want a friend to play with—promoting inclusion, empathy, and kindness. It also includes information on the history of buddy benches and how to start one.
Here is a video from our PAL students that introduces the Rustic Lane Buddy Bench and reviews how to use it successfully.
