The Juneau Community Charter School Experience
The Juneau Community Charter School (JCCS) is designed for families who value a high level of involvement in their child’s education, a strong partnership with the broader community, and opportunities for individualized instruction whenever possible.
Whole-Child Education
Our curriculum intentionally diverges from traditional models by emphasizing the development of the whole child—intellectually, socially, emotionally, and creatively. We encourage families to embrace this comprehensive approach and to partner with teachers in supporting students' holistic growth.
Fostering a Strong Community
JCCS thrives when students, families, and staff are deeply connected. We are committed to warmly welcoming new families and ensuring they feel an integral part of our school culture. We invite families to actively engage, share their experiences, and contribute to building a vibrant and supportive community.
Advocating for All Students
Parents at JCCS are not only advocates for their own children but also serve as voices for the broader student body. Families often participate in decision-making processes, always considering the best interests of all children within the school and the wider Juneau community.
A Journey Through the Full Program
Enrollment at JCCS is most impactful when considered as a full K–8 educational journey. Our small, close-knit environment combined with a constructivist, community-focused philosophy offers a cumulative and enriching experience that grows deeper with each passing year.
At Juneau Community Charter School (JCCS), we believe that few factors contribute more to a child’s success than active parent involvement. Families are essential partners in creating a rich, supportive educational environment.
Classroom Support
Parents have the opportunity to help out in their student(s) classroom(s) as they are available to do so. This may include assisting teachers with lessons, supervising lunch or recess, preparing classroom materials, or supporting office and specialist staff with other tasks.
Field Trip Participation
Teachers often seek additional parent support for field trips, both to transport students and to assist in supervising off-campus learning experiences.
Sharing Talents and Expertise
Our curriculum is continually enriched by the diverse talents within our community. Whether you speak another language, work in local services, write poetry, or are skilled at identifying bird calls, we encourage you to share your knowledge and passions with your child’s teacher.
Staying Connected
Teachers keep families informed through a weekly newsletter that includes classroom updates, school news, and important announcements. In addition to newsletters, we use email and phone calls to maintain strong communication with families. Staying informed about classroom and school activities is essential for supporting your child’s education.
Office staff also send out bi-weekly newsletters for general information about the whole school, updates throughout the year, as well as upcoming school and community events
Homework and Home Support
Homework expectations vary by classroom and will be outlined by your child's teacher. Parents play a key role in helping students build positive homework habits, supporting regular attendance at Homework Club when needed, and encouraging consistent practice, especially in areas like music instruction. Open communication with teachers about homework challenges is vital to your child’s success.
Partnering with Teachers
At JCCS, teachers work closely with families and view parents as true partners in the education process. They maintain open lines of communication and ask that families do the same, fostering a strong, collaborative relationship in support of each student’s growth.
Parent involvement in the operation of Juneau Community Charter School (JCCS) is fundamental to building the sense of community that supports a unique, collaborative learning environment.
Taking Initiative and Ownership
At JCCS, all parents and staff are encouraged to take an active role in the life of the school. We invite families to recognize needs, challenges, and opportunities when they arise, to bring these to the attention of the appropriate individuals, and to collaborate on finding solutions. Our school itself was built through this spirit of initiative and shared responsibility.
Flexible Participation for Every Family
We recognize that a family's ability to volunteer and participate may change over time due to work, family, or personal circumstances. JCCS strives to support all families in contributing meaningfully, regardless of marital status, employment obligations, or other responsibilities. We encourage open communication — please reach out to your child's teacher, the principal, the administrative or office assistant, or an Academic Policy Committee (APC) member for any questions or concerns. Together, we can find a way for every family to stay involved and connected.
