CAN'T MY PARTNER OR MOTHER HANDLE THIS ROLE?
A doula is an experienced (often formally trained) third party that helps families advocate for their best interests. We are familiar with hospital policies and options that aren't always presented in the moment. We work WITH partners or other support people to empower them on how to effectively support a mother in labor. In addition, labor is often long and a doula provides relief to a tired partner.

PHOTOS
While I don't claim to be a professional birth photographer, I am a trained artist (BFA, 2005) and I do all I can to capture some artful, memorable shots of your birth. I take photos while supporting your birth, so they are not my primary focus (you are!) but I manage to document some key moments that you won't want to forget. At this time there is no additional charge.

I completed my training in Kasana, Uganda at a birth house called "Shanti Uganda". There, women are given access to quality maternal healthcare in a land where unmedicated births and breastfeeding aren't the exception - they are the norm. Whether a birth is medicated, unmedicated, at home or in a hospital, birth is a natural, universal experience for families. When a birthing person feels supported and fully informed, the experience can be positive and empowering, allowing families to step into parenthood on the right foot. I have attended many births and maintain DONA certification. I completed a local doula mentorship with Blossoming Bellies Birth in Philadelphia and postpartum doula training with Active Birth Institute in South Jersey. I am also a certified childbirth educator.
While I've had the fortunate experience of having the unmedicated birth I wanted with my second child, I've also experienced the reality that many of us face: a birth with complications. My first was born with a major heart defect and required a c-section in CHOP's Special Delivery unit. It wasn't my vision, and I was scared knowing he'd be undergoing open heart surgery immediately upon birth. Since then I've joined the "heart mom" community and am pleased to offer experienced doula support to moms with known complications.
