Sight words are words that students should have memorized. They should be known on sight and said in a 'snap.' Sight words can also be referred to as high-frequency words because they are the words you most frequently see when reading, or irregular words, or trick words, or heart words because they do not follow the typical decoding patterns, so you need to learn the spelling patterns that are these exceptions 'by heart.' Memorizing sight words helps students become fluent readers.
Below, you will find a link to the Fry Lists by grade. Each grade has a list of 100 sight words we recommend be memorized by the end of the school year. Giving a long list of words is overwhelming for students. Please only practice a few at a time.
