Spelling goes hand in hand with phonics work and is practiced together. As students learn to decode (read) each syllable type, they also learn to encode (spell). We begin with writing the sounds that each letter represents, then move to spelling out single words for each syllable type, and on to writing sentences and encoding words with multiple syllables.
The ability to spell and write correctly shows full mastery of reading, and usually comes much more slowly. Even if students are accurately and fluently reading different syllable types, they may not be spelling them correctly. That is normal. Spelling takes time and patience. It can also be affected by the physical ability to grip a pencil or an understanding of how letters should fit within the lines on a page.
