About
The Global Nutrition Cluster was established in 2006 as part of the Humanitarian Reform process, which aimed to improve the effectiveness of humanitarian response programmes by ensuring greater predictability, accountability, and partnership. As stated in the GNC 2022–2025 Strategy, the vision of the GNC is that by the end of 2025, the nutritional status of the most vulnerable people is protection in countries at risk of, or with, ongoing situations of fragility. The mission of the GNC is to safeguard and improve the nutritional status of emergency-affected populations by ensuring an appropriate response that is predictable, timely, effective, and at scale.
Since 2017, the GNC has been operating with two critical support arms: 1) coordination/IM via the GNC Coordination Team, and 2) technical support via the GNC Technical Alliance. Both are vital cogs in the Nutrition Cluster wheel to help strengthen and sustain national capacities. Strong coordination and technical support in emergencies are vital in reducing duplication of efforts and preventing gaps from forming in service provision, as well as mitigating any conflict between nutrition actors so that → the right support can be delivered at the right time to the right people to save the maximum number of lives in emergencies.
Collectively, the GNC has more than 50 partners—organizations, groups, and individuals committed to respecting fundamental humanitarian principles, work in nutrition in emergencies, and actively help the GNC fulfil its role and contribute to its work plan. The GNC holds an annual global meeting for all partners and other stakeholders. Since the pandemic, the GNC has shifted the method of these global meetings and decided that holding them virtually was a more effective approach. This year, the GNC Global Meeting will take place virtually, with a three-day main meeting from March 25–27, 2024.
