*** Intentionally Missing Sunday Mass is a MORTAL sin. The Catechism states:
"The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin" (CCC 2181)
Sports, Parties, or being tired are not legitimate reasons for missing the Sacred Liturgy. Watching Mass on YouTube does NOT fulfill the Sunday obligation anymore.
Legitimate reasons for missing Sunday Mass: Serious illness, care for infants, or impossibility because of the act of traveling (aka, on a boat, etc...) While on vacation, consult: misstimes.org and search for the nearest church by zip-code!
Always feel free to speak with Fr. Tipton. If it is impossible to attend Sunday, you want to at least intentionally join in the Masses celebrated for you: Create a simple space to pray like a make-shift altar with a Crucifix and if possible candles. Then do either A or B below:
A) Simply as an aid, you can watch a Mass on YouTube (NOT the same as attending and NEVER counts). You should say the "Act of Spiritual Communion" below during the rite of communion.
B) Better option, do the below: (Note that there is no dialogue "The Lord be with you... and with your spirit" This is reserved for those with Holy Orders)
Start with the sign of the cross.
Say the Confiteor: "I confess to Almighty God..."
Read the daily readings out loud. You can click HERE to see today's readings.
Pause for a few minutes after the Gospel reflecting on the readings.
Say the Creed and offer some intercessions.
Say the "Our Father" followed by the "Act of Spiritual Communion:"
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
