*** Missing Sunday Mass is a MORTAL sin. The Catechism states clearly:
"The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin" (CCC 2181)
Sports, Parties, or being tired are not legitimate reasons for missing the Sunday Mass. Watching Mass on YouTube does not count!
Legitimate reasons for missing Sunday Mass: Serious illness, care for infants, or impossibility because of the act of traveling (aka, on a boat, ect...) While on vacation, consult: misstimes.org and search for the nearest church by zip-code!
For either A or B below: Create a simple space to pray like a make-shift altar with a Crucifix and if possible candles.
A) Simply as an aid, you can watch a Mass on YouTube (NOT the same as attending and NEVER counts). You should say the "Act of Spiritual Communion" below during the rite of communion.
B) Better option, do the below: (Note that there is no dialogue "The Lord be with you... and with your spirit" This is reserved for those with Holy Orders)
Start with the sign of the cross.
Say the Confiteor: "I confess to Almighty God..."
Read the daily readings out loud. You can click HERE to see today's readings.
Pause for a few minutes after the Gospel reflecting on the readings.
Say the Creed and offer some intercessions.
Say the "Our Father" followed by the "Act of Spiritual Communion:"
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
Close with the Sign of the Cross
Can I be an Altar Server, Sacristan, or Lector?
NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. Fr. Tipton will hold some trainings at the beginning of each academic year. To best fit the needs at the school, this is how we divide opportunities to minister in our liturgies:
Altar Servers - Open to our gents
Lectors - Open to both gents and ladies
Sacristans - Open to our ladies
Feel free to come speak to Fr. Tipton if would like to understand why we do it this way!
Are family members permitted to attend JP Masses?
Any Mass at JP is open to our school community! Feel free to come for any of our Liturgies indicated on the Liturgical Calendar. Just check in at the front office!
What if I need to receive sacraments I missed (First Holy Communion/Confirmation) or want to become Catholic?
NO PROBLEM AT ALL! Come speak with Fr. Tipton and we will discuss it! Remember that for Catholic Education, Parents are primary educators and will be part of this discussion.
Have other questions: you can email Fr. Tipton or submit a question below!
