Our Marching Band performed Friday night, and we were OUTSTANDING! We sounded exceptionally in-tune and together for this early in the season, and despite some problems caused by our non-traditional seating arrangement, our students rose to the occasion and put on a wonderful first performance. We enjoyed sharing the spotlight with the Jackettes again, too!
Our performance of the National Anthem was particularly impressive (and unexpected :)!
We probably broke some sort of land speed record unloading the trailer after our performance, with everything getting moved into the Band Room and put away in less than ten minutes. (literally TEN MINUTES!)
Most impressive, however, was our students' positivity, energy, and professionalism throughout the evening. Congratulations to our students (and to our Drum Majors!) for creating such a wonderful atmosphere for us all to enjoy!
Thanks to Mr. Martin and Mr. Daniel for their assistance during the game, and a special Thank You goes to Mr. Jacob Russo for pulling our trailer (and finding a parking place at the stadium :)!
We would LOVE to have our middle school musicians join us in the Marching Band! (This gives them the opportunity to play many fun songs at a very high level, and to learn from some of the best musicians in Louisiana!).
They are welcome to stay after school on Tuesday or Wednesday with us to see how things work, to meet some of our older members, and hopefully to have loads of fun playing their instrument! Please encourage your young musician to join the Marching Band, and contact Mr. Phelan with any questions.
We are beginning our third year as part of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra's LPO Academy program, and this year we are fortunate to have Mr. Jon Gannon (a professional French Horn player with LPO!) as our Mentor Teacher! Mr. Jon made his first visit this week, working with our high school brass players, and he will be joining us weekly and rotating between the different classes to share his passion and knowledge with our students.
Please be sure to thank the LPO for including Haynes Academy in this outstanding program!
Many colleges and universities invite high school musicians to visit and sit in with their Bands for a day, to get a taste of how fun being in a college Band can really be. This weekend (Sept. 13) there are two such events locally. Be sure to visit their respective websites for more information, including which grades are eligible to participate.

If you are aware of any other college Band events, please share them with Mr. Phelan, so he can then share with the rest of our Haynes Band community. Thanks!

We're taking our time, and have now learned a few notes (three, to be exact :). But, by setting a firm foundation, we will soon be able to leap forward into all sorts of fun and exciting music! We're even beginning to have a friendly competition between the A day and B day classes, to see which group can progress the fastest!
Our first piece for Spooky October is called Canticum. It's a bit challenging for some of our younger students, but well within our reach. We can't wait to play it for you in October!
(Spooky October, Veterans Day, and Holiday performances are all on the horizon)
Parents, please make sure to purchase the Essential Elements Books 1 and 2 for your student, so they do not fall behind. (We'll be using these books in class for reading practice and for many of their better exercises and pieces.)
We're splitting our time between rudimental drumming and melodics, and our students are definitely making progress!
All those little details we have addressed in class certainly paid off Friday night! We'll keep moving along, and sounding great! We are looking forward to our next performance on Sept. 11!
We'll practice Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons until 5:30 as we prepare for our first ever Marching Festival! We're working on our second piece (I Have a Love, from West Side Story), and we look forward to performing on the field for you on Sept. 11.
Please visit our Calendar for all the latest updates, and feel free to contact Mr. Phelan at any time with questions or concerns. We look forward to seeing everyone soon!
