Our Marching Band had an impressive first performance Friday night. We received rave reviews from everyone! Mr. Phelan heard many positive comments from several people, including "Your Band sounded GREAT!" and "They sound like a college Band!" We can't wait to get even better for this weekend's performance (hopefully without another lightning delay ... :). Thank you to Mr. Russo for delivering our trailer!
We would like to begin recording our performances during upcoming football games. If you are able to record us (even on your phone), please contact Mr. Phelan for more information. A link to our google drive folder was shared via email. Please post any recordings you have to the appropriate folder. We will begin posting our recordings to youtube in the near future, but for now feel free to browse and enjoy some of our past performances.
Congratulations to our All State Jazz Band auditioners! We had five students audition Saturday for the All State Jazz Honor Band, and they all sounded fantastic! We'll share results when they are posted. We are very proud of your hard work and determination!
We had a very informative visit last week from Mrs. Brittany Prater, JP Schools audiologist. She shared tons of great information with our students, and gave us all a few things to think about regarding the long-term health of our ears.
Dr. Quincy Hilliard is returning to Haynes!!!!! He will be working with our Beginning Band on Thursday Sept. 15, and will return to work with our other groups in the Spring. If you haven't yet had the chance to work with Dr. Hilliard, he is a wonderful musician and a great motivator for both students and teachers. He does an excellent job of working with every student no matter their level, and he definitely gets our students fired up about Band!
You can read more about Dr. Hilliard here:
We are also beginning to work on our composition project this week, in preparation for our Halloween Extravaganza. We hope to perform at least part of our creation for you in October.
Last (but certainly not least!), we will soon be holding a Dad's Day, to make some general repairs and upgrades to our trailer. If you are interested in breaking out the power tools and working on our trailer, please contact Mr. Phelan.
Our Marching Band will rehearse Tuesday and Thursday after school until 5:00. All students are welcome to participate.
Our next football game is Saturday, Sept. 17 @ Yenni Stadium (on the East Jefferson HS campus)
1:00 -- arrive stadium and unload
1:30 -- walk together into the stadium
2:00 -- kickoff
4:30 -- load and dismiss (Please be prompt to pick up your student.)
We invite all parents and supporters to join us! (Please note the new ticketing guidelines for Jefferson Parish events, and plan accordingly.)
Please note that there will be no transportation provided for this event. Students are responsible for securing their own transportation to and from Yenni Stadium for this event.
This will be an afternoon game. We will be sitting in the hot sun for the entire game. We strongly encourage all students to wear sunscreen as necessary. Hats and sunglasses will be allowed in the stands, as long as they do not interfere with our ability to perform. Please refer to our Band Camp guidelines for additional warm weather suggestions.
All students are welcome to join us for Marching Band. They may not be able to play every note or rhythm, but they will learn lots from the older students, and will have a great time, too! (Students must attend all practices to participate in the football games.)
All Marching Bands students must have the following supplies and uniform items:
Flip Folder (with extra pages)
Black calf length socks
Solid black shoes (no colors or logos should be visible)
Haynes Band t-shirt or sweatshirt
Black pants
Jazz Band One is our top Jazz performing group, focusing on performing challenging music at a very high level. We will rehearse after school Wednesdays. Students must be members in good standing of the Haynes Marching and Concert Bands to participate in Jazz Band.
This week we will have Dr. Quincy Hilliard on campus to work with our Beginning Band! We look forward to learning from this wonderful teacher and composer.
We are beginning to work on materials for the Junior High Honor Band auditions in December, (starting with everyone's favorite -- scales). Our students are making steady progress, and we are looking forward to playing for you.
Our first Jazz Band Two rehearsal is Monday Sept. 12 until 5:00. Jazz Band Two is our training group for younger or less-experienced musicians. We will focus on learning the basics of Jazz, and our music selections will be tailored to fit our younger players. Any Band student in good standing may participate in Jazz Band Two, regardless of instrument or experience.
Please visit our Calendar for all the latest updates, and feel free to contact Mr. Phelan at any time with questions or concerns. We look forward to seeing everyone soon!
