Thanks to a wonderful new program from the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, the Haynes Academy Band will be working with professional trombonist Matthew Wright! Mr. Wright is an outstanding musician, and he will be visiting us weekly to share his knowledge with our students. Students must return this permission form ASAP to participate in this program. (They are also receiving a hard copy in class, if that is more convenient.)
The Haynes Academy Band charges a $30 annual fee, which covers the purchase of music, transportation, etc. This fee has been posted to student accounts. Please contact Mr. Phelan with questions or concerns.
On Wednesday Sept. 13 during 4th period, we will take individual and group pictures of our Marching Band! Loupe Photography will be sending order forms, and you will be able to purchase pictures of your favorite Band students and sections. Students should wear their Haynes Band t-shirts to school this day, to minimize the amount of time they will miss class for pictures. We will take pictures as soon as possible during 4th period, so students should come to the Gym near the end of lunch.
We were so disappointed that we were unable to perform for our first football game. Thank you to everyone for your flexibility with our last-minute schedule change. We are going to be even more excited to play next week! A special THANK YOU goes out to Mr. Jacob Russo, for pulling our trailer!
We're planning to perform "Happy Together" with the Dance Team this week, and we'll be joined by the East Jefferson Band for a couple of tunes, too! We hope you will be there to cheer us on! (Please note the required Marching Band uniform detailed below.)
Our next football game is Thursday, Sept. 14 @ Yenni Stadium (on the East Jefferson HS campus)
3:45 -- dinner (on your own)
5:00 -- students are seated in the Band Room
5:15 -- load busses and depart for the stadium
5:30 -- arrive stadium and unload
6:30 -- kickoff
9:00 -- depart for school (we will text you when we are leaving the stadium)
9:15 -- dismiss (Please be prompt to pick up your student.)
We will be seated on the HOME SIDE of the stadium for this event.
We invite all parents and supporters to join us! (Please note the new ticketing guidelines for Jefferson Parish events, and plan accordingly.). Also, any student wishing to leave from the stadium must be signed out by a parent. Please contact Mr. Phelan with any questions or concerns.
All students are welcome to join us for Marching Band. They may not be able to play every note or rhythm, but they will learn lots from the older students, and will have a great time, too! (Students must attend all practices to participate in the football games.)
All Marching Bands students must have the following supplies and uniform items:
Flip Folder (with extra pages)
Black calf length socks
Solid black shoes (no colors or logos should be visible)
Haynes Band t-shirt or sweatshirt
Black pants
We encourage everyone to bring a disposable rain poncho or two, just in case.
We invite ALL Band students to join us for Jazz Band on Wednesdays until 5:00 pm. We're off to a great start, and would love to add a few more members to make it even better! It is GREAT to have Mr. Genevay with us again! He shares his knowledge and enthusiasm with our students, and we appreciate everything he does for us!
We are working on our Junior High Honor Band materials, and exploring new music every week. Please let Mr. Phelan know if your student's instrument is "less than perfect" so we can get it repaired or swapped out.
Tympani!!! We finally got to play something LOUD! (and rest assured that we took FULL advantage of this :) We're exploring basic chords and progressions, and will soon be improvising. We continue to work on our rudiments (especially paradiddles), and will start flams next week.
If you have not done so, please make sure that your student has their own copy of the Essential Elements for Band book 1 and 2, for their specific instrument. And, we have had our first Student Conductors! These students lead the class, so Mr. Phelan can sit in and assist other students as needed.
We're contiuing to improve on our double stroke rolls, and we've even begun to explore accents and taps. We'll be working on the Mallet Percussion instruments next week! Look out marimbas, here we come!
Please visit our Calendar for all the latest updates, and feel free to contact Mr. Phelan at any time with questions or concerns. We look forward to seeing everyone soon!
Mr. Phelan
