Announcements

Jazz Band

We will begin Jazz Band rehearsals on Thursday Sept. 5, until 5:30 pm.  Mr. Michael Genevay will again be working with our Jazz Band, and we appreciate his knowledge and enthusiasm!  

Please note that we will move a few of our Jazz Band rehearsals to the preceding Monday, to accommodate our Thursday night football games.  (See our Calendar for details.). Thanks in advance for your flexibility!

LPO Academy

The Haynes Band will again be partnering with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra to bring professional musicians to our classroom!  Thanks to the wonderful LPO Academy program, this year we will be joined by LPO trombonist Austin Richardson!

Morning and Afternoon Procedures

Students may drop off their instruments in the Band Room before school, and pick them up at the end of the day.   Students may not loiter in the Band Room before school.

Band Fee

The Haynes Academy Band charges a $30 annual fee, which covers the purchase of music, transportation, etc.  This fee has been posted to student accounts.  Please contact Mr. Phelan with questions or concerns.

Student Information Form

We ask all parents to fill out the Student Information Form on our website, to continue to receive our weekly-ish email newsletters.  This will also allow you to include additional email addresses as needed.  Thanks!

High School Band

First Football Game !!!

Our Marching Band will be performing Saturday Sept. 7 for our first football game of the year!  We will meet at the stadium, and dismiss from there after the game.  (No one should report to the Haynes campus -- we will meet at the stadium.)

6:00 -- arrive stadium and unload

6:30 -- walk together into the stadium

7:00 -- kickoff 

9:00 -- load and dismiss (Please be prompt to pick up your student.)

Marching Band students will need solid black pants, solid black shoes and socks, and their Haynes Band t-shirt for all performances.

We are excited to perform with the Jackettes at halftime this week!

Marching Band Rehearsals

Our Marching Band will rehearse this semester on Tuesdays and Wednesdays until 5:30.  We will continue to learn tons of new music, and we will perform at halftime during fotball games.  (Much of these practices will be OUTDOORS, so we encourage our students to eat and drink appropriately.)

All State Auditions

All State Audition dates have been set (and are posted on our Calendar).  Audition materials may be found via our Auditions tab.  (Mr. Phelan will be happy to print any excerpts needed--just ask).

• On Mondays, the Band Room will be open for extra audition help until 5:00.

Let Mr. Phelan know if your student would like to stay.

• All State Concert and Symphonic Band auditions will be held Sept. 14, at Brother Martin High School (in the afternoon, to accommodate the ACT that morning).  Second round auditions (for those who qualify) will be held Sept. 28, also at Brother Martin.

• All State Jazz auditions will be held Sept. 21 at Riverdale High School.  

All State Audition Workshop at Loyola

• All State Audition Workshop at Loyola will be held Saturday Sept. 7.  This free workshop is geared toward our High School All State auditioners.  We encourage all of those students to attend.   See more information here.

Middle School Band

Middle School All State Auditions

All State Audition dates have been set (and are posted on our Calendar).  Audition materials may be found via our Auditions tab.  All etudes and scales have been posted and handed out in class, so your student should have everything they need to succeed!

7th and 8th Grade Band

We've started working on our All State (and District Honor Band) music, and it's not as hard as we feared :). We'll be checking in on this material every clas period, and continuing to learn a few fun pieces to keep us moving forward.  All 7th and 8th grade Band students must purchase their own copy of the Essential Elements for Band Book 1 and 2, for your student's specific instrument.  Contact Mr. Phelan with questions or concerns.

7th and 8th Grade Percussion

We're working on All State (and District Honor band) music, and spending some time on the basics.  We are looking forward to another fun year!  All of our percussionists should have their own practice pad and sticks at home for personal practice.  (We have a class set of pads, so students may keep theirs at home.)

Beginning Band

We enjoyed meeting and working with Dr. Quincy Hilliard from UL Lafayette, and are well on our way to musical success!  We have taken our instruments home for the first time, and are excited to begin this musical journey.

All Beginning Band students must purchase their own copy of the Essential Elements for Band Book 1 and 2, for your student's specific instrument.  Contact Mr. Phelan with questions or concerns.

6th Grade Percussion

We're off to a good start, beginning with basic reading and stick control, and we'll be progressing quickly.  We'll be sending home recommendations on the best sticks for your young percussionist.  All of our percussionists should have their own practice pad and sticks at home for personal practice.  (We have a class set of pads, so students may keep theirs at home.)
