Congratulations

Congratulations to Jasmine Henry, Ben Shaya and Leeland Parten, who were selected to the District Six Junior High Honor Band!

A special shout out goes to Leeland, for earning First Chair Percussion!

Congratulations to Vaishnavi Kumbala, Angel Ma, Nischay Pothineni, Isela Garza, Sophie Yeon, Sam Korn, Avishka Fernando, Jack Roane, and David Russo, who were selected to the District Six Senior High Honor Band! They will be joined by All State musicians Ella Vu, Cooper Belletto and Zoe Heim for this year's performance.

A special shout out goes to Avishka, for earning First Chair Tenor Sax!

Congratulations (again!) to 6th graders Valerie Gaffney and Lydia Lauten, who were selected to the District Six Elementary Honor Band!

The District Honor Bands will perform in January at Tulane University. See the full Honor Band rosters at our District Six web site.

Awesome Guests

The Haynes Band was visited this week by several esteemed musical guests! On Wednesday, our Jazz Band One enjoyed an afternoon with Mr. Doug Stone and Dr. Molly Redfield from LSU. On Thursday, our High School Band had a fun workshop with Dr. Robert Schwartz, Director of Bands at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, La.

All of these musicians gave our students great insights into our various pieces of music, and they also explained some of the many musical opportunities (and scholarships) available for our young people after high school. Thanks to all of these wonderful folks for sharing their time and talents with our amazing students!

Upcoming Musical Opportunities

USM All South Honor Bands

The University of Southern Mississippi will be hosting their annual All South Honor Bands Feb. 10-12 on the USM campus in Hattiesburg, MS. See all the details via the link below, including audition information and fees. (Everyone is welcome to participate; auditions are simply for placement among the three Honor Bands.) This is a wonderful experience for ALL High School Band students! We encourage everyone to participate. There is a discount for registering before Dec. 1, so get moving :)

College Auditions

It is never too early to begin exploring some of the musical opportunities available at virtually every University on the planet. Students are welcomed into University ensembles REGARDLESS OF MAJOR, and will likely receive additional scholarships in return for their participation. (If you are enjoying High School Band, you will LOVE College Band!). Mr. Phelan is always happy to assist with contacting the college folks, setting up an audition, etc.

Mr. Phelan also collected tons of college flyers and posters at the All State convention. Stop by the Band Room to see all the goodies!

By popular demand, the Haynes Band will perform with the Krewe of Mad Hatters this year. Our spring rehearsal schedule has been posted to our Band Calendar. Marching Band members are expected to attend every rehearsal, and we invite our younger members to join us as we prepare for this fun and exciting event!
