Wow! Several of our students performed this weekend with the LMEA District Six Honor Bands, and all of our groups sounded great! Of special note were our Junior High Flutes (Jasmine, Radhika, Radhika and Alyvia) -- their conductor was beside himself talking about how wonderful these students performed! Thanks to all of our parents and supporters, including several of our friends, who came out to cheer on our young musicians!
In addition, we would like to congratulate Nischay Pothineni for being selected as the Outstanding Woodwind Player for District Six this year, and Zoe Heim, for being named the Outstanding Brass Player for District Six, for the second year in a row! We are extremely proud of these young musicians and all of their accomplishments!
Many of our Band students attended the LPO performance featuring our own Zoe Heim as featured soloist! We enjoyed your performance -- congratulations!!!
We have added several performance opportunities to our Calendar for the Spring semester:

We're already working on this year's Taste and Tunes performance, and WE NEED YOU to help make it the best one yet!
We ask everyone to visit our Taste and Tunes Involvement Form. Please volunteer for one or more positions, so we can get things moving!
Learn more on our Taste and Tunes web page, and check back often as this page will be continually updated.
The Haynes Academy Band charges a $30 annual fee, which covers the purchase of music, transportation, etc. This fee has been posted to student accounts. Please contact Mr. Phelan with questions or concerns.
That's not a typo -- we're already looking ahead to Band Camp next July! In order to help everyone plan their summer vacations (and to hopefully increase our Band Camp participation!) we have tentatively scheduled Band Camp 2024:
July 22-23 (Monday and Tuesday) = Percussion Camp
July 24 (Wednesday) = Drum Corps at USM in Hattiesburg
July 25-26 (Thursday and Friday) and July 29-31 (Monday-Wednesday) = Full Band Camp
We have no other details yet, including location or times, but we ask that you make every effort to have your students at Band Camp on all of those days. Thanks in advance for your cooperation!
Haynes Band T-shirts and Sweatshirts have arrived! Please send payment ASAP so we can send yours home. We did order a few extras, so contact Mr. Phelan to get your student the most stylish shirts on campus!
Spring practices will run until 5:30, so we may be prepared for parades and festivals.
Tuesday's practice will be an outdoor practice, working on all four of our marching pieces (Crazy Train, Locked Out of Heaven, Fat Bottomed Girls, and Hey Baby).
Thursday's practice will likely be an indoor practice (unless we can get outside, of course). We will spend some time on Safe Harbor, and read another possible tune for festival.
We are shifting toward an Attendance Policy for all rehearsals, to further encourage our students to organize their time efficiently. Please note that COMMUNICATION IS KEY when resolving scheduling conflicts. Parents, we ask that you help your students to plan ahead, and to address conflicts as soon as they arise. This is a great skill for "the real world"!!!
Any student with instrument or flip folder concerns should handle that TODAY, to give us time to work out any necessary problems.
All Marching Band students should have been fitted for a uniform jacket, and should have that number recorded with Mr. Phelan. If your student has not yet been fitted, please encourage them to come during lunch to do so. We have a limited number of sizes, and all the good ones are going fast!
Also, students must have solid black shoes, socks, and pants to march in this year's parade. If you still haven't gotten these items, please do so.
ALL Marching Band students are asked to bring another case of water for our upcoming parade. (Anything that doesn't get used during practice or during the parade will be used for our Special Olympics performance or even at Taste and Tunes, so feel free to bring extra!)
Our Jazz Band will continue practicing this Wednesday until 5:00 pm, as we begin to prepare for the Bill Evans Jazz Festival at SLU in Hammond.
Our Jazz Vocalists will also be practicing on Mondays until 5:00 pm. (Thanks for putting in the extra time and effort!)
This week, during jazz band, we practiced Moon Juice, Why Musicians Can’t Dance, Work in Progress, and Niobe to prepare for the Bill Evans Jazz Festival. It’ll be in Hammond on Thursday, April 18!
On Thursday, due to the bad weather, we marched indoors. We practiced Crazy Train, Locked Out of Heaven, and Fat Bottomed Girls, and we sounded really good :)
Friday, part of the band went on a field trip to see the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra at the Jefferson Performing Arts Center. Shoutout to Zoe for an amazing horn solo!
Have a good weekend! 😎😎
