The flute is the smallest of the beginner instruments. It is also one of the most popular instruments for beginners. Students are able to play pleasant little melodies within the first few weeks. If a student is able to make a sound by blowing across the top of an open soda bottle, they will likely be able to easily make a sound on the flute.
Physical Characteristics: If a child has small hands, the flute might be a better choice. A child with an overbite usually makes an excellent flute player. The child with even teeth and lips that are firm usually will be successful. The child's left arm must be long enough to reach across the body in order to hold the flute in proper playing position. Flute players should also have agile fingers for moving this multi-keyed instrument through a fast musical passage. Students with extreme overbites (receded jaw) should avoid choosing flute as this makes it difficult to produce quality sounds. Having braces is not normally an issue for students that play the flute.
Other Considerations: Flute parts usually have the melody (recognizable) part.
