The clarinet is a woodwind instrument and is also a popular instrument for beginners. It uses a “single reed” and a mouthpiece to produce the sound. Clarinet is often the 'default' instrument when the other instruments do not fit. The clarinet takes more patience than some other band instruments. It is more difficult to produce a pleasing tone when starting out, but with consistent practice, the tone can be refined. The hard part about playing the clarnet is covering the holes.
Physical Characteristics: One necessity of clarinet tone production is the ability to make the chin flat. If a student has very small hands, the clarinet may not be a wise choice because the fingers must be able to cover all the holes properly or it will be difficult to make a proper sound.
Other Considerations: Clarinet parts often have the melody (recognizable) part. Clarinet players are responsible for maintaining a working stock of 3-4 quality reeds.
