Reading/Language Arts focuses on building students' reading abilities, including fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking. Students learn and apply reading strategies throughout the year. Students continue to refine comprehension skills through the reading and analyzing of increasingly higher level literary and informational texts. This process will include group and individual projects, class and homework assignments, and ongoing assessments. The students will take the 6th grade STAAR reading assessment.
Students will also develop an understanding of imaginative stories, poetry writing, narrative writing, expository essays, literary responses, multimedia presentations, persuasive writing, and research writing. Grammar and spelling are taught by example which allows students to develop the ability to correctly use parts of speech, punctuation, and capitalization.
The course enhances students’ language skills by emphasizing critical thinking and logical development of ideas as students use the communication skills of reading, writing, research, and media literacy. Students demonstrate style, voice, and sophistication in appropriate composition. Students draw data from multiple primary and secondary sources for use in research reports and projects. Students present oral and written reports, including presentations strengthened by visuals and media.
This course prepares intrinsically motivated, task-oriented, proficient readers and disciplined writers for success in our high school Advanced Placement /Dual Credit programs. Students will grasp and master grade level curriculum and move beyond basic concepts through rapid transition from concrete to abstract conceptual learning. Students are expected to read and write above grade level, participate in class discussions, complete group projects, written and other individual assignments and/or projects. Students should be prepared for independent reading, research, and writing outside of the classroom. The students will take the 6th grade STAAR reading assessment.
This course incorporates elements including reading, research and listening and speaking. Students will read, understand and respond to a wide variety of literary and informational texts. Emphasis is on the comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills in an interactive environment. Students will take the 7th grade STAAR reading assessment.
Students will also explore additional elements including writing, research, oral and written conventions and listening and speaking. Students will use the writing process to compose a variety of written texts (expository and persuasive essays, poetry, letters and research) with clear ideas, coherent organization and sufficient detail. The students will take the 7th grade STAAR writing assessment.
This course is a double block class which integrates language arts by exploring genres such as fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama, through analysis of literature that reflects a diverse cultural and literary heritage and the creation of each genre through the writing process. The grammatical, mechanical and syntactic skills of language are taught within the context of composition with students using technology to enhance the written and oral composing processes emphasizing editing and revising to produce polished publications for specific audiences. The course enhances student’s language skills by emphasizing critical thinking and logical development of ideas as students use the communication skills of reading, writing, research, and media literacy. Students demonstrate style, voice, and sophistication in appropriate composition. Students draw data from multiple primary and secondary sources for use in research reports and projects. Students present oral and written reports, including presentations strengthened by visuals and media.
