Grading:
40% Major Grades -Tests & Projects
30% Lab/Quiz Grades
30% Daily Grades
Many grades will be taken during the 9 weeks as an opportunity for students to show their mastery of content. There is never one single grade that will "make or break" an overall grade. A minimum of 2 major grades will be taken, typically 3 weeks into the cycle and at the end of the cycle. Homework is RARELY assigned. The only time your student will have work to do at home is if they did not finish their work in class, opportunities for extra credit or enrichment.
** Pre-AP students have a 9 weeks project to complete every 9 weeks. This project is done outside of class time and counts as 2 major grades. **
It is expected that assignments will be completed and submitted on time. Missing work is unacceptable as it results in ZEROs in skyward. If a student fails to complete or turn in an assignment, parents or guardians will be notified and arrangements made for the student to complete the assignment during tutorials. Zeros in SKYWARD will serve as a placeholder until the missing assignment is turned in within the allotted time frame. If the missing assignment is not turned in during the allotted time frame then the zero will stay in SKYWARD
Assignments will be evaluated and scored in a variety of ways. Students and guardians will be able to use assignment scores to determine areas in need of extra support to help prepare the student for mastery on the Biology EOC/STAAR exam in April.
Grades will be posted in a timely manner with detailed descriptions to help facilitate conversations between students, parents/guardians, and teachers about the student's learning progression in Biology.
If you ever have a question regarding your overall course grade or a grade your received on an assignment, please do not hesitate to email me fieldern@joshuaisd.org
If there is a * symbol in skyward, this means the assignment name has been entered into skyward but has NOT YET been graded. The system marks it as "missing", but it may not actually be missing. If your student is truly missing an assignment, it will have a ZERO in skyward. The zero means I have graded the assignment and I do not have one from your student yet.
Biology Course Breakdown:
*Please note that topics in GREEN font indicate Readiness TEKS which are mainly tested during the Biology EOC exam. Blue font topics indicate Supporting TEKS, which are tested but not as heavily as the Readiness TEKS on the Biology EOC exam. Supporting TEKS help the student understand and make connections between the core Readiness TEKS. Supporting TEKS are crucial for students to understand gain full comprehension of the Readiness TEKS and make scientific connections in Biology.

Pens (blue/black)
Colored pencils
*This is not a requirement, but I am excepting donations of COLORED printer paper. All class notes will be color-coded for each unit to help students with organization and students will learn that ALL colored notes MUST be kept for the duration of the school year in preparation for the Biology STAAR Exam. I truly appreciate all donations! <3
