The Jazz Band is an auditioned group that performs a large variety of musical styles. The Jazz Band performs at concerts and festivals throughout the year as well as extra performances at lunch time, basketball games, and other miscellaneous events throughout the year. Jazz Band is a very high energy group full of dedicated musicians who are looking to gain additional experience on their instrument that they play in other groups.

Below contains information regarding Jazz Band auditions for the 2026/2027 school year. The philosophy of WJHS Jazz is that there is a place for students of all skill levels within our jazz program. Auditions are required for placement into a WJHS Jazz Ensemble.
WIND SECTION: Saxes, Trumpet, & Trombone:
1. Scales- Directors will select 2 from the scale sheet at the audition.

2. Chart Excerpts- Perform both excerpts. Reference recordings are provided for practice only. Students will perform without accompaniment in the audition.
3. Improv (optional) - play 2 choruses of improvised F Blues over the recorded track. Students wishing to be considered for Jazz I must attempt this portion of the audition
4. Sight Reading
RHYTHM SECTION: Piano, Guitar, Bass, Drum Set:
1. Scales- Directors will select 2 from the scale sheet at the audition. Drum set players, skip this section.
