How to Practice:

1.  Check key signature, then mark notes you might miss

2.  Check time signature, look for pick-ups

3.  Look at the "map" of the song - does it have repeats or a DC?

4.  Break it up into sections, only focus on one section a day

Practicing techniques1.  Check to make sure you know how to finger and play all the rhythms in the song.  If the fingering is tricky, NOTE AND FINGER.  It always helps.2.  Air and finger through it, see where the tricky spots are.3.  Play the first measure.  If you get it right, move on to the second measure.  4.  Play the second measure.  If you get it right, put it with the first measure.  If they both sound good, move on.3.  Play the third measure, add to the first and second measures.4.  Play the 4th measure, play the whole phrase (if it's a 4-measure phrase).5.  Do the same thing with the next phrase.  Put phrases together or do entire lines.  Make sure you're playing articulations correct, and dynamics too!If at anytime something doesn't sound good, figure out where you're having trouble.  Isolate the spot, then play that small chunk through VERY SLOWLY until it sounds good.  Then speed it up gradually.Once you can play it close to the correct tempo right, add a note or a beat in front of it.  Then add a beat behind it (or vice versa).  Then add a few more.  Add the whole measure in front of it.  Or the measure after it.  Keep adding until you can play the whole phrase smoothly. What to do if it sounds bad:Read the bolded part above that tells you to slow the problem area really slowly and spend some time doing that.  Make sure you have the right fingering and counting and you're high/low enough if you're a brass player.  (Arrows are our friends!!)  If you don't know what you're messing up on, listen to a recording.  See if you can hear where you sound different than the recording.  Play with the recording and hear where you're different.  Noting and fingering always helps, too.  If you get really stuck, e-mail Miss Johnson and we'll set up some time on Google hangouts where I can listen to you play it and help you.
