7th Grade Elective Descriptions 24-25

Art Foundations 1 Art Foundations 1 provides an overview of visual arts while studying a broad variety of art tools and materials. With an emphasis on studio production, this course is designed to develop higher-level thinking, art related technology skills, art criticism, art history, and aesthetics.

Brass Band 1 This is a beginning band class offered for students who wish to learn to play the cornet, trumpet, French horn, baritone horn, euphonium, trombone, or tuba. Practice outside of class time and performances are part of this course. An instrument is required. If available, a French horn, baritone horn, euphonium, or tuba may be rented at the school for a nominal fee.

Woodwinds Band 1 This is a beginning band class offered for students who wish to learn to play the flute or clarinet. Practice outside of class time and performances are part of this course. An instrument is required.

Soprano/Alto Choir This is a vocal music course open to all students with soprano or alto vocal ranges. Two and three-part music is performed at various concerts. Primary consideration is given to part-singing, good vocal production, and rudiments of music. Rehearsals and performances outside of class time are part of the course requirements and constitute a portion of the grade

Tenor/Bass Choir This is a vocal music course open to all students with tenor or bass vocal ranges. Two and three-part music is performed at various concerts. Primary consideration is given to part-singing, good vocal production, and rudiments of music. Rehearsals and performances outside of class time are part of the course requirements and constitute a portion of the grade.

Orchestra I: Cadet Orchestra (Beginning) Students learn to play violin, viola, cello, or string bass. Students must purchase two method books. No prerequisite course or knowledge of music is required. Content pieces consist of Beginning thru Very Easy music (Grades O - 1.5). Content targets: By the end of the school year, students expertly perform 6 major scales, sight-read Grade .5 music with 87% (B+) accuracy, and perform Level 1.5 music with 100% accuracy. Students perform in two evening concerts for families and friends. The academic grade comprises daily participation points, performance attendance, out-of-school practice time, and skill tests. There is no course fee. Non-Violin (Viola, Cello, Bass) school-owned instrument rental is $80.00. Students renting school instruments will likely share use of the instrument with students in other Orchestras.

Guitar 1 This course provides opportunities for students to develop their musical potential and aesthetic understanding through learning to play a guitar. Emphasis will be placed on: playing position, tone production, fundamental technique, simultaneous playing and singing, reading music, and composing songs/lyrics. Knowledge and skills will include experiences in singing, playing, listening, and connecting to cultures. An instrument is required for class time, as well as for practicing outside of class.

Creative Writing This semester class is designed to introduce students to imaginative composition with the writing of short stories, creative projects and poetry. Students should take this class if they are interested in writing for fun. Students will write every day in class, and have many opportunities to be creative. This is a great class for students who love to write stories.

Journalism This course is designed to introduce students to multimedia journalism skills including interviewing, video production, writing feature articles, event promotion, creating content for the school website, and the development of school-wide video announcements.

Students will be responsible for all aspects of creation and production. Depending on demand, we may require an application at a later date.

World Language Exploration Ever think about learning a language in school, but not sure what language to learn? World Language Exploration is a half-year class that gives you an introduction to all 3 languages taught at South Jordan Middle School. In this class, you will learn basic communication skills in Chinese, French, and Spanish. We will also compare cultures and make connections to your own language and community. This is your chance to come have fun and get a little taste of each language!

 

Beginning Coding is an introductory computer science course that empowers students to create projects and engage with computer science as a medium for creativity, communication, problem solving, and fun. You will build websites using HTML, create your own original apps and games for computers and mobile devices, and gain a lot of useful technical skills.


 

7th Grade PE Credit Options:

Fitness 7 This is a physical education course to develop a solid foundation in skills and competencies. Students are still mastering basic manipulative skills, and are ready to engage in lead-up games and drills that provide a progression toward participation in regulation or advanced play. Students will apply skills in modified games, and may be introduced to regulation rules and game play. Instruction includes an introduction to training principles and activities that can . enhance health-related fitness as students pursue personal fitness goals.

Beginning Dance 1 This course offers basic dance techniques, fitness fundamentals, movement qualities, and rhythm with an emphasis on creativity,. sequencing, and problem solving.

Yoga 7 This class focuses on structural alignment, increase of strength, and flexibility. It will deepen a student's awareness of breath and the role it has in generating energy and stamina in one's mind and body. The course will also incorporate techniques for stress relief, and enhance one's physical performance by teaching students how to connect breath, organ systems, physiology, and anatomy all together.
