International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program

Announcements

8/1/23 - Welcome to the start of our first full year as an authorized MYP school.  I am excited to get started with the full support of the IB behind us!  This year, we are going to make three big pushes for the MYP.  First, we are going to make an effort to assess our students using the MYP Objectives and Criteria.  Second, we are going to share our MYP inquiry information with students and parents for each MYP class. Third, we are revamping the Personal Project in order to provide more support to our sophomores as they take undertake that self-directed journey.  Please browse this website to learn more about each of these opportunities!

11/4/22 - Today, I am happy to share that our school has officially been authorized as an IB World School for the MYP!  I'll share this excerpt from our authorization letter: "As an IB World School offering the MYP, you are part of a global community of schools committed to developing knowledgeable, caring young people who will be ready to negotiate their futures successfully and make contributions resulting in a more harmonious and peaceful world. We commend your school’s educators, administrators, students and families for their active roles in choosing to offer the MYP. The positive results of this choice will become evident in your community as classes of MYP students graduate and undertake activities that enhance social, cultural and economic environments locally, nationally and, perhaps, internationally."

2/10/22 - With the start of Sparta Time this month, personal project has officially gotten underway as our sophomore seminar!  The personal project is a capstone activity for our MYP program at Smithfield Middle and SSS.  My favorite feature of the personal project is the opportunity for students to get a taste of lifelong learning, and engage in an academic pursuit of one of their own interest.  If you want to see more, check out the Personal Project tab on this website.  I can't wait to see what our class of '24 Spartans create this spring!

11/8/21 - I'm happy to share that we have started recognizing Spartan Profiles of students who exemplify our IB Learner Profile traits.  What started as a student of the month sort of idea has grown into a collaborative school wide effort to recognize the best among us.  For starters, 21 students were nominated in our first round of "Balanced" students, and most of those nominations came from classmates.  1 nominee was chosen from each class to represent our school.  Now, our other special programs (DP, CP, AVID, JOCO Teach, NAF Academy, Fire Academy, ROTC, etc) are going to begin identifying students who fit these traits as well.

We will continue to recognize our MYP students of the month here, in addition, you will see them on display in the hallways, hear them over  the announcements, and catch them on social!

8/9/21 - Welcome back to SSS!  We are making many exciting changes to our MYP (grades 9-10) classrooms this year and I look forward to working with you to learn about these changes and understand how they will help our students grow and succeed in school and beyond.  As you look through this website, each tab in the search bar across the top will help you will learn more about the Middle Years Program.

"The MYP Curriculum" will guide you through the goals of the program from the perspective of The International Baccalaureate and from our perspective at SSS.  Use this tab to learn about why we are implementing this program at our school.

"The Personal Project" will provide important information to 10th grade students and parents about a new task that all of our sophomores will complete during the school year as part of the MYP.

"The MYP Schedules" will help you make sense of what courses students are taking during grades 9 and 10 and how those requirements might change if you are enrolled in other programs within the school."

What is IBMYP?

We offer the International Baccalaureate's Middle Years Program, which we are working to implement in an effort to better serve our community.

The MYP is a program for all SSS students in grades 9 and 10.  While students joining us from Smithfield Middle have been part of the MYP since grade 6, students from Selma Middle and other schools can expect a seamless merger into the program.

The MYP is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world.  It prepares our students to be successful in future endeavors by helping them build meaningful skills they can carry with them as lifelong learners.

Learn more by clicking "The MYP Curriculum" tab in the navigation bar on the top of the page.
