Originally from Ohio (Go Bucks!), I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Atmospheric Science from The Ohio State University, then moved to NC and began teaching in 2006. Since that time I have earned a Masters degree in Science Education, and received National Board certification as well. This will be my 17th year at Clayton Middle, and outside of my regular teaching duties I also serve as the head coach of the girls track team, and sometimes assist with Science Olympiad. My wife Katie and I have three awesome children (ages 11, 8, and 6). When I used to have spare time, I enjoyed frisbee golf and strategy board games.

Teaching Philosophy:

Science isn’t just a subject; it’s a way of thinking, and a way of gaining knowledge. However, in my classroom, I don’t just want students to KNOW stuff, I want them to be able to DO stuff with what they know. The two most important things we will be doing in my classroom this year are:

  1. Becoming our future selves through our daily actions, choices, and attitudes

  2. Learning how to learn (teach a student about Science, they learn for a day; teach a student how to think scientifically, they learn for a lifetime).

My best friend, Oliver Fuzzball. Just kidding! I don't like animals that much, but I hear that other people do.

This is a pergola that Mr. Butler and his friend built. Using Science! But mostly math....
